Description
PATENTED JULY 16, 1907.
S. M. REESE.
FENCE POST. APPLIoA'rIoN FILED JULY 10,1906.
-is provided'with a recess 4, which receives a reduced SHELTON ML REESE,
OF LYONS, GEORGIA-` FENCEF'POST.
- No. 860,246.- specification o f Letters Patent. Patented July 16, 1907.
Application tiled Tilly 10, 1906. Serial NO- $25,518.
To all 'whomf'it may concern: "Be it known that I, SHELTON M. REBsE, a citizen 0i the UnitedStates, residing at Lyons. in the county of Toombs and State oi Georgia, have invented a new -and useful Fence-Post,' oi' which the following is a Another object of the invention is -to provide a port able fence post, which will enable a fence to be easily erected and readily taken down when it is desired to -remove the same.
With the'se and other objects in view, the-invention consists in the 4construction and novel combination cliparts hereinaft-,er fully described, illustratedein the accml'ipanying drawing, and pointed out in theclaims# -hereto appended; it being understood that various -r changes in thel arm, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims;-I vmayberesorted to without departing from the spirit orsaricing any of the advantages of the invention.
'a detail sectional view on the line 5--5 of Fig, 4. Fig.
6 is a detail sectional View on the line 6-6 of Figui. Like numerals of reference designate corresponding -parts in all the figures o the drawing.
1, designates the lower portion or base oi' a fence 4post,which' is provided with an integral upper section or member 2, and which is designed to be constructed *ofimetah The base 1, which is tapered, is adapted to be readily embedded in the ground, and i'tis of greater width than the upper section or member 2, and projects beyond the lower end of the saine. The projecting portion 3 of the upper end oi' the base portion or tongue 5 of the lower end of a clamping bar or member 6. The upper end oi the upper section or member 2 `of the post is enlarged to provide a proprojecting portion of the base, and which is provided in its lower edge or face with a recess 8 to receive the upper end of the clamping bar or member (i.
The lower end of the clamping bar or member 6 is connected with the base by a pivot 9, which pierces the sides of the recessed projecting' portion 3 of thebase, and which also passes through the reduced portion or tongue 5 of the clamping bar. The clamping bar is adapted to swing inwardly and outwardly to open and close the i'enee post to enable fonce wires or woven wire fencing to be arranged between the clamping bar or member, and the upper section or member of the post is to be clamped by the said parts.
The upper end of the clamping bar is provided with a slot 10, through which passes a bolt .11, when the clamping bar is closed as shown in Figs. 1 and 4 of the drawing. The bolt, which also pierces the upper end of the section or member 2 of the fence post, extends through the recess 8 thereof, andV is provided with a flattened head 121, which is adapted to be arranged transversely o i the slot 10 to engage the clamping bar, and which is also capable of being arranged longitudinally of the said slo't l0 to release the clamping bar. The head 12 of the bolt is of a size to pass through the slot 10, when the clamping bar is ,swung outwardly. The bolt is provided at its threaded end with .a nut 13, which ,engages the rear edges or faces of the section or member Y 2 of 'the post, and which is adapted to enable the clamping bar to be drawn inwardly to kink or crimp the wires of a fence, as hereinafter fully explained.
.The-outer section or member of the post is provided with a longitudinal rib 14, forming side recesses 15, and provided with wire receiving notches 16. The clamping bar or member is provided at its inner face with n longitudimi groove 17, which forms projecting sides or flanges 18 and the latter are adapted to straddle the rib and extend into the recess l5, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawing, lor crimping or kinking the fence wires. The fence wires are adapted to be bent aroiind the rib 14 into the side recess 15 by the clamping bar to form the kinks or bends, which will prevent the fence wires from slipping across the post, and which will operate to hold the post in proper position when the fence is erected.
The post, which is constructed o1 metal, may be easily and cheaply cast; it not only possesses great strength, but is very stable when erected, and it will enable wires to be stretchedand strained without displacing it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new and desire t'o secure by Letters Patent,
l. ln a tence post, the combi-nation of ltwo relatively movable sections or members. one of the sections or inem jecting head 7, which is located directly above the bers being provided with u narrow longitudinal rib having wire-receiving notches, and spaced xfrom the-side .faces of such section or member To form lmigifudizmlv recesses, :ind file ulher section nr member being provided with n longitudinal groove receiving the rib and formingsides er fizmges. which extend inte the side recesses to chimp tine fence wires, und menus for securing the sections or meinbers together.
2. A fence post comprising; u base'. havingl :i recess at its upper end, the'upper section or' member rigid witirthe base end provided with :i projecting head having n recess, i
clamping bar pivoted in the recess -of the base and fitting y in the recess of the lie-nd, and means located :it the head for securing the clamping bar in the 'recess thereof.
'In :1- fence post, the combination of two sections or members, one of the sections or members beinghinged :1t one end' and provided nt the other end with :i slot. und a boit mounted on the other seciion or. member :rnd having al flattened vbend lof a size to passthrough the slot aud'zldzipt.- ed' 'io'exteud across the same.
al.` A fence post comprising :i base,`an upper-section or "member rigid with the base and provided with a iongitudinai rib, said upper section or memberbeing also provided with :1 projecting head; a clamping par hinged to'the base and having a groove at its inner face to receive the rib. and means for securing the upper endl o'theclamping bnr to the Lupper .section or member et the projecting hea'd theref.
In tesimony, that I claim the vforegoing as my ewn,- 1 have hereto nixedjmysignatdr'e 'in the 'pl'esence'of ltwe witnesses.
