FENCE-POST.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Oct. 3, 1905 To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ASA PEVOTO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berry, in the parish of Cameron, State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to fence-posts such as are employed in the building of wire fences, and more particularly to the means for holding the fence-wires to the post, the object of the invention being to provide a construction wherein a number of wires may be securely clamped to the post in such manner as will hold them firmly against movement in all directions, while said wires may be readily released when desired.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a fence-post embodying the present invention and having a number of wires attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the post with the clamping-bar shifted into position to release the wires. Fig. 3 is a section taken longitudinally through the post with the parts in their clamping positions.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a post comprising a main body portion 5, the lower portion 6 of which is rectangular and of reduced diameter and is sharpened. At the upper end of the body portion of the post is a reduced neck 7, which terminates in an enlargement or head 8. The body portion projects at one side beyond the neck, and in this projecting portion is a longitudinal chan' bar is reduced in cross-section, as illustrated at 14, and is engaged in the socket 11, in which it fits with such looseness as to permit of the clamping-bar to be readily engaged and disengaged.

Upon the reduced neck portion 7 is slidably mounted a collar 15, which is split and which is movable on said neck portion into and out of engagement with the reduced upper end portion 16 of the clamping-bar, said collar,

when engaged with the portion 16, serving to hold the clamping-bar in the channel 10.

The fence-wires (illustrated at 17) are passed between the clamping-bar and the body of the post and the bar is then pressed into the channel 10, so as to bend the wires and carry them into the channel, after which the collar is slid into engagement with the upper end of the clamping-bar to hold it with the bent portions of the wires in the channel. By thus bending or kinking the wires they are held against longitudinal movement with respect to the post, and to hold them securely against vertical movement the post or body portion of the post at the sides of the channel 10 is provided with transverse notches 18, so that at whatever height a fence-wire is clamped it will lie in a notch at each side of the slot.

Then it is desired to remove the wires from the posts, it is necessary only to raise the collar, when the clamping-bar may be swung outwardly or may be lifted entirely away from the body of the post to release the wires. By the use of the split collar a tool may be inserted in the split and in this Way the collar expanded, so that it may be readily driven upwardly and out of engagement with the clamping-bar when it might otherwise be difficult to remove it.

I/Vhat is claimed is A fencepost comprising a body portion having a reduced longitudinal extension at its upper end and an enlarged head at the upper end of said extension, a split collar slidably mounted upon the extension, an upwardlyopening socket in the lower portion of the body, said body having a longitudinal channel in its face extending from said socket upwardly to the reduced portion,and a clamping-bar having one end removably engaged in the socket and having its upper end reduced and engaged in the collar, the bar being adapted to lie in the channel and the enlarged head at the upper end of the body of the post being of a size to prevent movement of the split ring from the posts.
