Description

-provements in Internal-Combustion thev following is a speci'cation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEE-TOE.
JAGOB GUNTEER, .OE COLOGNE, GERMANY, AssIGNOR To THE OTTO GAs ENGINE WORKS,
OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA'.
` v`:NTEmanL-ooirriaUsTn'nN ENGINE.
-'ilpeciiication of Letters Patent; 4 Application iiled November 15, 1905. Serial No.,2r8'7,459.
I APatentedJuly 16v, 19`07.
To all whom it may concern: e
Beit known that I, .Tacos GUNTHER, lof Cologne, Germany, have invented certain nes-vr and usefuly Imngines, whereof My .improvementsrelate particularly to engines of the type in which a charge of liquid fuel is atoinized at the termination ot the outward stroke of the engine pis-- ton by the actionoi a plunger connected with said piston. Ordinarily, enginescof this class are so constructed and arranged that the 4atomizing pressure ,Y rises gradually in correspondence withthe movement of the piston toward the -end of -the stroke, so that the velocity of the air used -iii atomizing thev liquid gradually rises Vfrom zero `to maximum during the atomizing operation. 'Ihe effect 0i such anjarrangement is-that i only` the last portion'oi 'the uelcharge is -properly atomized; that Which is first discharged being insulticiently comminuted by the low pressure air blast.
It is the object of my invention to-so construct and arrange a device ot' the character contemplatedV that the atoinizing operation'ldoes not begin until a charge of air is' 4.available at such high pressure as to instantly attain the proper degree of comminution of theuel.
. As hereinafter described my invention comprises a plunger carried by the engine piston andl fitted in an auxiliary cylinder at the end of the engine'cylinder so that when said plunger enters said auxiliary cylinder,
toward the end of the stroke of the piston, it excludes a j space in the main cylinder from a space in the auxiliary cylinder, and air is compressed in the end ofthe engine cylinder to a degree efficient for instantaneous atomiza- ,l tion,- and then, lby the traverse of said plunger, a port is uncovered establishing communication between the charge of uel to be atomized and said highly compressed air; so that the fuel is projected atomized,v into c the atomizing chamber at a substantially uniform pressure throughout the atomizing operation.
My invention comprises the various novel featuresoi construction and arrangement hereinafter more defi'- ment of my invention, the engiile piston and connected atomi'zer plunger being at the beginning ofthe stroke ef the letter. Fig. n, Shows the mechanism indicated in' Fig. I, but with the atomizer plunger at thatposition in its stroke where thefair is'admittedto atomiz'e,
engine pi stonV 2, re'ciprocates'an'd said piston' carries the tiallyas set forth.
In said figures, 1,b is the Ieanginecylinder-in which thel Aatomizer cylinder 6, which connects the space 7, in the through the pipe 17. Said pocket-15, is connected 'by 60 the passage way 19, with the annular port 20,- in the atomizer cylinder 6.
It is to be understood that vthe arrangement. above described issuchthatwhen the plunger 4, reaches the l position shown' in Fig. I, the sp'ace in the atomizer 6 5 chamber 8', is separated fiom lthe space 7, in the cylinlder 1, by the head 5, oi the plunger 4, and the air contained in said space7, is compressed until, by the traverse oi the plungertoward the left in the drawings, the port 20, is uncovered as shown in Fig. II, and the '70 air compressed insaid space 7, being thus admitted through said port'20, to the pocket 15, projects the fuel charge, atomized, into the chamber 8.
It may be noted that the operation above described is such that the atomizing operation doesnot begin until the air in the space7, is at such a pressure as to de-- liver the fuel through the nozzle 14, in properly com-1 c minuted condition. n
I donot desire to limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement herein set forth, as it is obvious that various niodications Amay be made therein Withl out departing from the essential'i features of my invention.
I claim:
1. In an internal combustion englne,`the combination with an engine cylinder of an atomizer cylinder connected with said engine cylinder; 1 liquid fuel pocket connected with said atomizer cylinder through an atomizer nozzle;
a portein said cylinder leading to -said pocket; -a piston arranged ,toreciprocate in said engine cylinder; and, an
atomizer p1unger,' carried by said piston, arranged to cover and uncover said portduring its traverse, substan- ,.2.-,ln an internal combustion engine, the combination with an 'atomzer cylinder; of a liquid fuel pocket con- 95 necte'd with said4 cylinderl through an atomizer nozzle; a port 'in said cylinder leading to-.said pocket; an .engine :cylinder-,connected with 'said atomizer cylinder; apiston arranged to `reciprocate in said engine cylinder; and,` means carried by said piston, arranged to admit compressed air`thr'oi1gl1 said port to said pocket und thereby atomize the fuel charge from said pocket, substantially as set forth. 3. In an internal combustion engine, the combination' with' un atomvizer cylinder; of a liquid fuel pocket connected with said cylinder through an atomiz'er nozzle; a 105l port in said cylinder connected With said pocket; an engine cylinder` connected with said'atomlzer cylinder; a piston arranged't .reciprocate jin said engine cylinder; and,
-menns arranged to admit compressed air through said port A 'to said pocket and thereby atomlze the fuel charge from 110 said pocket, comprising a plunger, carried bysald piston, and a head on said plunger fitted to suid atomizer cylinder, substantially .as set f orth. L
4. In an internal combustion engine, the combination with :1n atomzer cylinder; of a liquid fuel pocket connectedwith said cylinder through an atomizer nozzle;
-port in said cylinder lending to said pocket; an engine cylinder connected-With said ntomizer cylinder; a piston arranged to reciprocate in said engine cylinder; and,
10 means carried by sid piston arranged to compress nd admit air through 'said port to said pocket and thereby v-utomize the fuel charge from said4 pocket,` substantially ,as set forth. l y
In testimony whereof, I have -hereunto signed my name at Cologne, Germany this 26th'day of October. 1905.
.- i A y JACOB GNTHER.
