FRANK L. MARONEY, OF
JOLIET, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF. ONE-THIRD TO EDWARD CARROLL, OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS SPIRIT-LEVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1907.
Application filed ay 3, 1906- Serial No. 315,045.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK L. MARoNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at J oliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spirit-Levels, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are to so shift the position of the spirit tube in the levels used by carpenters and masons, so as to indicate any divergence from the horizontal or perpendicular, and it can be usefully employed in constructing streets, laying tile or sewer pipe, etc., where more or less divergence from the horizontal is often required. 1 attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 an enlarged side elevation, and Fig. 3 a cross section.
1is a carrier to rotate on pin 2, the whole being sup-' ported by bracket3, the latter being secured to the wooden frame 4 by wood screws. Arms 5 of carrier 1 terminate in forks 6 and 7 which receive the sleeved and grooved cups 8, which cups are channeled so that one can be adjusted between forks 6 and the other rendered slidable to any desired position on forks '7, for the purpose of inserting removing or holding the spirit tube 9 in place. The lower one of forks 7 has a pin 10 riveted into it upon which is coiled spring 11, which acting on cup 8 keeps the shoulders of recesses in cups pressed firmly against the ends of tube 9. Tube 9 can be removed or inserted by removing pressure of spring 11 on cup 8 and sliding cup 8 back on forks 7.
12 are the adjusting screws, screwed into and through bracket 3, and lower ends resting on carrier 1, by means after, while so adjusted, indicate that the same is level or whether it diverges from a horizontal or perpendicu lar.
What I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An improved adjustable spirit level, consisting of the ordinary wooden straight-piece, provided with an opening through the side of said straight-piece; a bracket rigidly connected to the frame surface in said opening; a carrier pivotally connected with said bracket; forks 6 and forks 7 of said carrier; channeled cups or receivers, slidable. on said forks 6 and said forks 7; a spring secured to one of said'forks 7 so that when the ends of a spirit tube are inserted into the recesses of said cups, said spring will press with sufiicient force against one of said cups to hold said spirit tube rigidly in position, and also permit the instant removal or replacing of spirit tubes, when desired; adjusting screws 12, operated at the edge of the level, for shifting the position of said carrier and thus adjusting the spirit level to any plane, all as set forth within an angle of 20 degrees from either the vertical or horizontal.
2. In a spirit level, a carrier for a spirit-tube; forks 6 and forks 7 of said carrier; channeled cups or receivers slidable on the forks 6 and the forks 7 of said carrier; :1 spring secured to one of said forks 7 for the purpose of holding one of said cups against the end of said spirit tube so that the latter can be easily and quickly removed and replaced, all as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. i
FRANK L. MARONEY.
