Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW MURDOOH, OF OR ISTOBAL, PANAMA.
EX ERCISING AND MASSAGING DEVICE.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW Munnoon, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Cristobal, Canal Zone, Panama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exercising and Massaging Devices, of which the following is a specification, such. as will enable those skilled in'the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to exercising devices, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be easily and conveniently manipulated and by means of which an entire body, or all the parts thereof may be exercised and developed and the chest and lungs expanded.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved exercising device; Fig. 2 a cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and, Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 2 of a part of a device but on an enlarged scalel.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a bar a preferably of wood and from three to five feet long, and this bar is provided at its end or adjacent to each end with an eye or ring a, and connected with the eyes or rings a is a cord, rope or similar device b. The cord b is provided at its ends with hooks b by means of which connection maybe made with the eyes or rings a and the length of said cord including the hooks b is a predetermined amount greater than the distance between the eyes or rings 0, or preferably from twelve to eighteen inches greater than the distance between said eyes or rings.
The bar a is preferably made'of wood and is also preferably provided on the side thereof with which the eyes orrings a are connected, with a metal plate 0 having knobs or projections c-,and the rings or eyes (F are preferably connected with the ends of the plate 0.
The plate 0 may be secured to or may be countersunk in the bar a and said plate may be of any desired width, and the knobs or projections 0 may be of any desired size. i
The cord b isprefe'rably about an inch in thickness and in the operation of this device the cord bis grasped Specification of Letters Patent. I Application filed May 26,1906. Serial No. 318,794.
Patented July 9, 1907.
nately so as to press the bar a on the back and cause it to rub over the back from the neck to the feet, and this operation may be repeated as often as convenient and as long as desired.
In the operation of the device as above described, thebar a may be swung transversely of the back. or partially around the body, and in the operation of raising and lowering the same pressure is applied to all parts of the back, and to the sides of the body, and to the backs of the legs and the sides thereof, and it willbe understood that in raising and lowering the arms any I desired amount of strength may be employed and the pressure of the bar a on the parts with which it comes in contact may be regulated in this way. In this operation, the body maybe held erect and the arms only moved, or the body may be bent into any desired position and in this Way the entire frame and all the muscles may be exercised.
'My improved exercising device is particularly adapted for expanding and enlarging the chest, and when using the same for this purpose the body is preferably held erect while the arms are raised and lowered to the fullest extent, and the bar a moved upwardly and downwardly over the back of the operator and also moved laterally, and in the operation of this device the cord b is preferably grasped near the ends thereof so as to expand the chest and exercise more fully the muscles of the chest, shoulders and back.
It will also be understood that the device cannot be conveniently used by one hand, but must be used by both hands, and this feature also aids in the exercise and development of the various parts of the body in cluding the muscles of the arms, body and legs.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is -1. An exercising device of the class described, comprising' a rigid bar of predetermined length provided on one side with knobs or projections arranged at intervals, said bar being also'provided with a flexible device which is connected therewithat different points and the length of which is greater than the distance between said points projections, said bar being also provided at predetermined points with rings or eyes, and a cord or other flexible de vice of a length greater than the distance hetween said points and provided at each end with hooks adapted to engage said rings or eyes. i
In testimony thht I claim the foregoing as my inven tion I have signed my name in presence 01. the subscribing witness this 12th day of May, 1906.
