Be it known that I, HENRY CLAY STANLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to toys, and comprises an improved form of hoop rolling device by which a wheel or hoop may be set into rapid rotation and easily directed so that it will roll as desired by the operator.

My invention also includes a duplex handle which may be divided up so that each of two operators may have the necessary apparatus for rotating the hoop and so send the same back and forth between them.

The preferred form of apparatus embodying my invention is illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings in which: Figin-e 1 is a side elevation of the complete apparatus. Throughout the drawings like reference figures indicate like parts.

1 represents the wheel or hoop which may be of any desired material, but preferably is formed of some sound deadening substance such as hard rubber. A series of spokes 2, 2, of any convenient design, connect the hoop with the hub 3, which carries the journals 4, 4, and any convenient form of drum 5, on which the cord 6 may be wound.

7 is the duplex bifurcated handle formed in two parts 8 and 9, which are temporarily connected together in any convenient way, asby the slotted plates 10, 10, fastened to one half of the duplex handle, and the studs 11, 11, fastened to the other half and cooperating with saidslots. Each of these portions of the handle is bifurcated, as at 12, to permit of the introduction of the hoop between the two bifiu-cated portions, and each is provided with diagonally arranged slots l3, 13, which serve as journal bearings for the journals of the hoop, as shown in Fig. 1.

The method of operating my invention is as follows: The string being wound upon the drum of the hoop, the same is mounted in the diagonal journal bearing slots. The operator holding the handle in one hand, pulls upon the free end of the string with the other, unwinding the same from the drum and setting the hoop into rapid rotation. By then lowering the handle so that the wheel comes down upon the fioor or ground, the" same will jump from out of its bearings in the diagonal slot, and will be directed by the position in which the handle is held so that it will roll in any direction, or may be so inclined to one side that it will describe a circle and return to the operator. By separating the two portions of the duplex handle, one operator may take one portion and go to some. distance and the second operator retaining the second portion, can spin the wheel and send it to the first operator who in his turn will spin it again and send it back.

It is evident, of course, that various-changes could be made in the details of construction shown without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Other forms of hoop and drum might be substituted; othermeans for connecting the two portions of the duplex handle might be employed; the duplex features of the handle might be omitted in some cases; but these modifications would still be within the principle of my invention.

Having, therefore, described my invention, I claim:

1. In a hoop rolling toy, the combination of a bifurcated portable handle provided with outwardly extending slots, a hoop journaled therein, a drum concentric with the axis of the hoop, and a cord winding upon said drum.

2. In a hoop rolling toy, the combination of a bifurcated holder provided with diagonal outwardly extending slots, a hoop journaled therein, a drum concentric with the axis of the hoop, and a cord winding upon said drum.

3. In a hoop rolling toy, the combination of a duplex bifurcated holder, each portion of which is provided with diagonal outwardly extending slots in its bifurcated end, means for temporarily connecting the two portions of the duplex holder back to back, a hoop adapted to be journaled in the slots in either portion of the duplex holder, and means for rotating said hoop.

4. In a hoop rolling toy, the combination of a hoop provided with journals, a duplex bifurcated holder each portion of which is provided with journal bearings for said hoop and means for detachably connecting together the two portions of the duplex holder.
