SHEET-MUSIC STAND AND TURNING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1907- Application filed July 6, 1906. Serial No. 324,773.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAZARESCO CoCHINO, a subject of the King of Roumania, and residing at Bucharest, Roumania, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Sheet-Music Stands and Turning Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sheet music stands and turning devices, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which Comprises a base, a top portion having a sheet music holder, said base and top portion being connected by an upright tubular member, and operative devices located in the base and in the top portion and connected by a shaft passing vertically through the upright tubular memher, said operative devices being adapted to be operated by a pedal-or pedals; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in devices of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my im provement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional side View of the top portion of my improved sheet music stand and turner partly in section and showing the operative devices located in said top portion; 'Fig. 2 a sectional plan view of a part of the operative devices shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a side view of the operating devices shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing other parts of the operative devices located in the top portion of the music stand and sheet music turner; Fig. 5 a front view of the device as shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 6 a detail view of the ends of three of the sheet music turning arms shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5, and showing the clamps connected therewith; Fig. 7 a sectional plan view of the base portion of my improved sheet music holder and turner; Fig. 8 a sectional front view therei of; and, Fig. 9 a perspective view of part of the operat ing devices shown in Figs. 7 and 8 located in the base portion of my improved music sheet holder and turner.
In the practice of my invention I provide a device of the class specified which comprises a base a, a tubu lar upright member a and a top portion a connected with said tubular upright member a The base portion a is, in the form ofconstruction shown, composed of a casing in. which the bottom operating parts of the device are placed, but said casing may consist of a frame if desired and the top portion a in the form of construction shown, is also composed of a casing open at the front and bottom.
Extending through the vertically arranged tubular member a which connects the base and top portion of the device is a shaft b provided with a bottom support; 1) in the base portion of the device, and connected with the lower end portion of said shaft is a collar I) having a plurality of projecting arms I) which are preferably triangular in form as shown in Figs. 7 and 9. At the opposite sides of the lower end of the shaft 1) are mounted laterally arrz'tnged crank shafts c the outer ends of which are supported at c and the inner ends thereof at c, and each of said shafts is provided with two cranks c and c, and connected with the outer cranks c" are springs c which are secured in the top of the base portion of the device.
In the rear part of the base portion of the device is a transverse rod (Z on which are pivoted two pedal levers (Z which extend forwardly, and the pedal levers are connected with the cranks c of the crank shafts c by means of backwardly directed links The springs c serve to hold the pedal levers (Z in the position shown in Figs. 8 and 9, and the rear ends of said levers are preferably provided with slots (1 through which the rod d passes so as to permit of a slight longitudinal movement of said levers, and connected with the rear ends of said levers are springs d which hold said levers in their normal position, but the slots (2 and the springs d are not absolutely essential and may or may not be employed. The inner end portions of the crank shafts c are provided with rigidly attached arms a and these arms operate in connection with the arms I) of the collar I) of the shaft 11, and said arms are preferably provided with cushions of rubber, rubber and canvas or other suitable material.
Within the top frame or casing a of the device and in the front part thereof is mounted a stationary vertical shaft 0 on which, in the form of construction shown, are mounted three collars 0 each of which is provided with a segmental gear 0 and each of the collars c is provided with a downwardly and outwardly curved arm 0, and each of said arms is provided with an upwardly directed clampf. The upper end of the shaft 1) is also provided with three collars g each of which is provided with a segmental gear and the segmental gears o operate in connection with the segmental gears c", and the teeth of said gears and the intervening spaces between said teeth are preferably cycloidal in form as shown in Fig. 2. The shaft bis also provided, in the form of construction shown, with a grooved cam wheel h and supported in the frame or easing a is a spring operated bolt h the head of which bears in the groove of the wheel h, and the perimeter of said wheel and the groove therein is divided into three separate parts forming indentations or recesses It" therein.
The top frame or casing of the device is also provided With two bottom arms 2' and a top arm 1'? to which is l they have been depressed, as hereinbefore described,
secured a sheet music holder j, and said sheet music i holder is provided at the bottom thereof with a flange j the end portions of which are cut out, and the back of the holder is preferably provided with pads j" at its opposite bottom corners.
The clamps f with which the arms a are provided are preferably composed of two spring jaws f mounted on upwardly directed headed pins f connected with the arms a, and the spring jaws f 2 are connected with sleeves f movable on the pins f and said jaws are also provided with sliding collars or bands j which serve to force said jaws together and cause them to grasp and hold a sheet of music in the inanner of other devices of this class, and the object of making the clamps vertically movable on the pins f is to provide means whereby the height of said clamps may be adjusted if desired.
The normal position of the various parts is that shown in Figs. 1 and 5, and 8 and 9, in which the arms (1" are all turned to the right, and in practice the sheets of music are placed on the holder j in the usual manner and are successively connected with the arms 0 beginning with the top arm. When it is desired to turn the first sheet of music the right hand pedal lever (Z is depressed and this operation throws back the corresponding arm a of the corresponding crank shaft 0, and the arm a strikes one of the arms I) of the collar b and turns the shaft 1) through a third of a revolution, and at the same time the corresponding arm a and the sheet of music connected therewith are turned to the left, and the successive depressions of the right hand crank lever (Z will turn all of the arms 0" and the sheets of music connected therewith. When all of the arms 0 have been turned to the left they may be turned back to the right by means of the left hand pedal lever (Z which is operated in the same manner as the left hand lever in order to accomplish this result.
In the above described operation the spring operated bolt If operates in connection with the grooved cam wheel h and serves to stop the revolution of the shaft 1) at the proper time, said bolt operating as a l'ric- 1 tion brake, but it will be understood that in each rotation of the shaft If enough power must be employed to throw the bolt 7L2 backward against the operation of the spring mounted thereon. The cam wheel h and spring operated bolt h? are not absolute essential features, however, and may or may not be employed. The upward movement of the pedal levers d after is limited by a transverse bar or similar device 7; at or near the front portion of the base a, and said pedal levers are preferably provided with sleeve shaped cushions 76- where they strike the part 7;.
In the operation as hereinbefore described the cranks c perform the striking action of the arms while the function of the cranks U is that of returning the striking arm c to their operative position.
This device is simple in construction and operation, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;-
1. A sheet. music holder and turner, comprising a base and a top portion connected by a tubular standard, a main shaft passing vertically through said tubular standard. :1 supplemental shaft supported in the top of the device in front of the main shaft and provided with music turning arms having segmental gears, segmental gears connected with the top portion of the main shaft: and operating in connection with the segmental gears of said arms. pedal shafts mounted in the base portion of the device. and means whereby the operation of one of said pedal shafts will turn the lnain shaft in one direction and the opcrw tion of the other shaft will turn said main shaft, in the opposite direction, consisting of two crank shafts arranged laterally of the lower end of the main shaft. and in op erative connection with said pedal levers, said crank shafts being provided with arms which operate in connection with arms on said main shaft.
2. A sheet music holder and turner, comprising a base and a top portion connected by a tubular standard, a main shaft passing vertically through said tubular standard, :1 supplemental shaft: supported in the top of the device in front of the main shaft and provided with music turning arms having segmental gears, segmental gears connected with the top portion of the main shaft and operating in connection with the segmental gears of said arms. pedal shafts mounted in the busdportion of the device, and means whereby the operation of one of said pedal shafts will turn the main shaft in one direction and the ()DCl'ih tion of the other shaft will turn said main shaft in the opposite direction, consisting of two crank shafts arranged laterally of the lower end of the main shaft and in operative connection with said pedal levers, said crank shafts being provided with arms which operate in connection with arms on said main shaft, and springs for bold ing said crank shafts and pedal lovers in their normal position.
