To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES E. Knrrnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Toy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 1
My invention relates to an animated toy involving figures designed to represent two negroes in a butting match.
Objects of my invention are to provide a toy of the indicated character having simple and effective operating means to carry the figures to and from each other, and to so arrange the members of the figures to give the impression of the figures taking a step to and from each other.
Other objects and advantages of the novel construction will appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a toy embodying my invention; Fig.
'2 is a similar view with part of the cam wheel broken away and with the parts in different positions from those shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken beneath the platform and above the actuating mechanism. Fig. 5 is a face view of a modified form of cam wheel.
In constructing a toy in accordance with my invention, a hollow structure or stand 10 is provided, forming a casing for the actuating mechanism, the top 11 of which constitutes a platform. On the platform 11 near the ends, are posts 12 about which ropes 13 extend in simulation of the S0- called pugilistic squared circle.
Above the platform 11, figures 14 are placed, and in practice, these will have the heads 15 inclined forwardly so that when the figues closely approach each other, they will simulate the colliding movement of a butting match as practiced by negroes. The arms 16 preferably, are pivotally mounted to increase the action.
To support the figures, one leg 17 of each figure is integral with the body thereof and is rigidly supported on the upper end of a vertical pin 18, each pin 18 rising rigidly from a reciprocating block 19. The blocks 19 have dove-tail rear sides 20 having guided lment of one`block 19 away from the opposite block, will place the spring 23 under tension so that its re-action will return the block thus moved.
To reciprocate the blocks 19, a cam wheel 25 is provided mounted on a transverse shaft 26, said shaft having a crank handle 27 at one end for turning the same. On the shaft 26 is a cam 28 disposed between the blocks 19, the body of the wheel being of greater radius than the cam and overlapping the blocks 19. The width of the cam 28 is such as to be accommodated in recesses 29 in the faces of the blocks 19, the recess in one block being at the top and the. recess in the other block being at the bottom. The arrangement is such that as the wheel 25 is revolved by the shaft 26, the cam 28 will contact with the unrecessed portions of the opposed edges of the blocks 19 and cause the said blocks to separate. Upon the nose of the cam coming opposite a recess 29 in a block 19the spring 23 will force the recessed block forwardly. The continued movement of the cam 28 gradually forces the opposite block 19 outwardly leaving the first block in the forward position for the time being. The result is that the figures 14 will follow the movements of the respective blocks 19 and be carried alternately forward so that each figure in succession gives a sudden butting movement.

In order to give the figures the effect of taking` a forward step, the one leg 31 of each figure is pivo-tally secured to the body as at 32 and the lower end is pivotally secured to a staple 33 or the like, in fixed position on the platform 11. Thus, the movement of the integral leg 17 of the gure will be to and from the pivoted leg 31.
Stop pins 34 are preferably employed between the blocks 19 to limit movement to-l ward each other. In the illustrated construction, I have shown the Yshaft 26 having a collar 35, secured by a set screw 36 at the end of the shaft opposite the crank handle 27. The cam wheel 25 is shown as secured to the shaft 26 by a set screw 37. The shaft 26 has bearings in the casing 10 at opposite sides, and on said shaft, between the cam wheel 25 and the adjacent side of the casing, is a spacing sleeve 38.
In Fig. 5, the cam wheel, 25, has transverse pins 28a in a side face thereof and disj posed in a curve to constitute the cam.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new, and desire Vto secure by Letters Patent:
l. A toy of the class described including a supporting structure, figures oppositely disposed, a leg on each figure having a pivotal connection at its upper end with .the figure and a pivotal connection at the foot with a relatively fixed part of said structure, blocks slidably supported in said structure below said figures to move to and from each other, the said figures having each a leg rigid with the figure and rigidly connected with the said blocks, a retractile spring connecting the said blocks, a wheel mounted to turn in said structure and having a cam member disposed between the said blocks, said cam terminating in a lateral projecting nose, the said spring maintaining the blocks in contact with said cam, the said blocks in their opposed ends having depressions, the depression in one block being at the top of the block and the depression in the otherv block being at the bottom of the latter, said depressions being adapted to alternately accommodate the nose of the said cam, and stop pins on said structure adapted to be engaged by the respective blocks. j y
2. A toy of the class described including 'ally connected at its upper end with said figure in the rear of the first leg, and pivotally connected at the foot member thereof with the said platform, blocks on which said posts are rigidly mounted, said blocks being slidable beneath the platform to and from each other, a spring connecting the vsaid blocks, and a revoluble cam disposed between the blocks and adapted to alternately move the same to and from each other.
3. A toy of the class described including a supporting structure, figures oppositely disposed, blocks slidably supported in said structure below said figures to and from each other, the said figures having each a leg rigid with the figure and rigidly connected with the said blocks, a retractile spring connecting the said blocks, a wheel mounted to turn in said structure and having a cam member disposed between the said blocks, said cam terminating in a lateral projecting nose, the said spring maintaining the blocks in contact with said cam, the said blocks in their opposed ends having depres sions, the depression in one block being at the top of the block and the depression in the other block being at the bottom of the latter, said depressions being adapted to alternately accommodate the nose of the said cam, and stop pins on said structure adapted to be engaged by the respective blocks.
