Description

Earl/@sier Il.. IIIIIIIIIII w54 but..
.. tatrs' w-efeisfahm- JACOB WESTHAFER, OF QUINCY, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 85,880, dated January 12, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IIN @LOVER-HARVESTERS.
IhachedulerdmodtotnthmeetnPantnndmkingpandtholn To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1,JAeon WBsrrrivrrzn. of Quiney,
in the eounty of Logan, and in the State of Ohio, have ,y
. selinaker P.
invented certain newand useful Improvements in Ch ver-Striprn-rs; and dohereby declare that-the followin; r i
is a full, elear, and exaet description thereof, reti-renee being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention eonsists: in the eonstruetion and general arrangement of a rnaehine for stripping clover, the peculiarities of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
ln order' to enable others skilled in the art to whieh my invention apper'trins', to rnake and use the saine, I will now proceed to describe its eonstr'uetion and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, and
Figure 2, a side View.
A A represent two parallel bars, placed at a suitable distanee from eachother, and connected by three erossbars, C C, one near the front ends, and two near the rear ends of the bars A A.
On the bars C C is placed a platform, D, with a box, E, a suitable distance from the bar A'.
The carriage thas formed is suppruted b v three wheels, one driving-wheel, 1 `,plaeed on an axle in the side of the box E, between said box arid the bar A'; a smaller wheel, G, on the opposite side of the box, having its axle extending from the platform l); and an adjustable wheel, H, placed under' the rear end of the bars A A', which latter' wheel has itsjorlr'nal-beal'- ings in the lower forked end of a rod, I.
This rod, I, rrrns through a journal-box plaeed at the rear' ends, between the bars A A', and pivoted to a lever, K, which lever is pivoted to a standard, L, on the rear side of the last cross-bal' C.
The front end of said lever is held in any position desired b v being plaeed in the notehes on the inner side ofthe bent oar M, which is secured to the outer side ofthe bar A.
The driver, from his seat, N, operates this lever by his foot, and, it will be seen, raises or lowers the front end of the machine by simply lowering or raising the wheel 1i, as described. Y The tongue, to which the team is hitched, is attached in any suitable manner, between the front ends of the bars A A'.
The box E, which, as described, is placed on rthe platform 1), is open on the front side, the sides extending in front Aof the platform.
To the t'ront edge of said platform is secured a series of knives, O O, which are slrar'p-rminted, and proded with cutting-edges on both sides. A
When the nia/shine is in operation, the clover-straw mines in between the knives O O, and the beads of the clover eut off, leaving the straw standing.
The elo\erhe.rds are raked into the box E by the 'lhis eonsists of a plate, which tits between the sides of the box E, and is secured to a frame, B, moving on the outside ofthe box, as shown in tig. 1.
The rear side of the frame R is connected by a rod,
' S, with a bent lever, T, said lever being pivoted t0 the platform 1) in the rear ofthe box E.
The other end of the leer T is slotted, and a. pi'n passingtlirough this slot connects it to a movable bar, l', which runs in slots ou the two rear bars C C, and at its for ard end is connected by a pit-man, Y, to the driving-wheel F.
lly this arrangement, at each revolution of the driving-wheel, the seltlraker 1 is moved into the box E, and forward again, but as the lower' edge ofthe raker n-sts against, or at least is elose to the platfonu and knives, it would not rake the clover in.
For that purpose I plaee under the platform a shaft., the end of which, at the side of the rbivng-wheel, is provided with a bent arrn, W; arnl a pin, X, on the inner side of lthe driving-wheel l", in striking the rear par-t of said arm, raises its front part at the time when the raker l is moving feu'ward. The front part ofthe bent arnr W is so arranged, that when the frame B. rnoves tbrward, it will be raised up by the said arm, thus raisingr the raker up, and at the rrrornerrt when the taker has eorne to its foremost porrt, the pin X ceases to operate on the rear part ofthe arrn, thus allowing the front part to drop down, releasing the taker, so thatit rnay eateh the elover eut by the knives.
To insure regularity-in the up-anddown movement of the raker, I plaee a similarly -bent arm on the other end ofthe shatt mentioned, to operate in like manner on the fralne R on the other side ofthe box E.
llaving thus fully described my invention,
What l elairn as new, and desin to secure by Let. ters Patent, is
1. The arrangement of the box E, taker I, frame 1l. slotted and bent lever AT, movable bar U, pitnran Y. and wheel l", all eonstrueted andolwrating substau tiall) as arnl for the purposes herein set forth.
'.2. The arrangenwnt of the bent arnr \\',on the end of the shaft, in combination with the pin X and the driving-wheel l", for the purpose of raising and loweringr the raker l at the proper time, substantially aa herein set forth.
1n testimony that I claim the foregoing, i have hereunto set rny hand, this 27th day ofJnly, 1868.
' JACOB 'ESTHAFEB.
