CHARLTON PATTERSON AND HERMAN L. ABRAHAMS, OF RUSSELL, KANS.
SULKY-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,328, dated November 9, 1880. Application filed July 2, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OHAnLToN PATTER- soN and HERMAN L. ABRAHAMS, of Russell, in the county of Russell and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sulky-Plows, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a frontelevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation taken through the line a; m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish sulky-plows in which the adjustable axles can be raised and lowered to regulate the depth at which the plows work in the ground without throwing the wheels out of line and without affecting the set and gather of the axles.
A represents the arched bar of the carriage. To the landside-arm of the arched bar A are rigidly attached the inner ends of two parallel bars, B. To the opposite sides of the outer ends of the bars B are attached the ends of two bars, 0, forming a space or slot to receive and serve as a way for the square arm of the axle D, upon the journal of which the wheel E revolves.
To the inner end of the axle D is rigidly attached, or upon it is formed, a vertical cross bar or rod, F, the end parts of which pass through and slide up and down in holes or hearings in the inner parts of the bars B.
To the inner side of the middle part of the rod F is pivoted the lower end of a short bar, G, which is curved upward, and to its upper end is pivoted the end of the curved short arm of the lever H. The bent lever H is pivoted at its angle to a support attached to the arched bar A, and its upper arm projects into such a position that it can be conveniently reached and operated by the driver.
To the upper part of the lever H is pivoted the angle of a small lever, I, the upper arm of which projects into such a position that it can be operated by the hand that operates the lever H. The upper arm of the lever I is held out by a spring, J, attached to it, and the free end of which bears against the lever H.
To the end of the short arm of the leverI is pivoted the upper end of a pawl, K, which slides in a guide, L, attached to the lever H. The lower end of the pawl K engages with the notches of the arched bar M, the ends of which are bent inward, and are attached to the opposite sides of the arched bar A, so as to hold the lever H, and with it the axle D, in any position into which they may be adjusted.
With this construction, by operating the lever H the axle D and wheelE can be raised and lowered to adjust the plow to work at any desired depth in the ground while keeping the frame-work of the plow level.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arch A, having the rack M, the parallel bars 13, provided with bearings, and the vertical bars 0, forming a slot or guide, in combination with the axlearrn D, having the crosshead F, the curved link G, and the elbow-lever H, substantially as shown and described.
