UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
DANIEL E. FLORY, OF TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
GAR-STARE.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL E. FLORY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Stakes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to railway appliances, and especially to the stakes used on flat cars, and has for its objects to produce a stake which is readily removable without injuring the person operating it and which is vertically adjustable to any desired height, and to which may be fastened the side boards which will convert the fiat car into a gondola car. I attain these objects by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which, i
Figure l is a side view of the end portion of a at car equipped with my stakes. Fig. 2 is a partial view of the end of the car showing my stake in use when logs are loaded on the car. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical cross-section of my device, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal cross-section thereof.
Similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings I have illustrated the fiat car with a floor l supported by means of longitudinal sills 2 and end sills -3. Adjacent to the outer sides of the outer sills 2 are secured the auxiliary sills 4 The stake pockets are secured to the car at about the usual position and consist of castings formed as shown in Fig. 4 with avertical pocket 5 open at top and bottom, and supported from the main sills 2 by the webs 6 and legs 7 the webs 6 being separated by a short space in which the hereinafter described gear is mounted. The pockets are secured to the sills 2 by means of the usual U-shaped bolts 8 which engage in suitable grooves formed on theoutside of the pocket 5. The pocket 5 is formed with a rectangular `cross-section in which the rectangular stake 9 loosely fits. This stake 9 is formed of metal and is hollow and has the rack 10 formed' in the side adjacent to the car. This rack l0 ismade by forming in the side of the stake "9 a vertical series of holes, as illustrated in Fig. 3, into Which the teeth of the gear ll mesh. The rack l0 extends the entire length of the stake 9 The under surface of the auxiliary Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 30, 1905. Serial No. 285,014.
Patented July 2, 1907.
sill 4 is grooved to receive the longitudinal operating shaft l2 which passes from end to end of the car on which are mounted the above mentioned gear wheels ll between the webs "6 of each stake pocket. On the sill 3 at one end of the car is mounted a dog I3 which engages the ratchet wheel 14 mounted on the shaft l2. The hand Wheel l5 is secured to the end of the shaft l2 in Ysuch position that the shaft may be readily turned from the end of the car. The dog 13 and ratchet 14 are so arranged as to keep the shaft l2 from rotating in the direction which would lower the stakes 9 It will readily be seen that with my device I am able to so adjust the height of the stakes above the Hoor of the car as the circumstances of the load on the car require, and I can, therefore, load a greater number of logs on the flat car than can be done with the usual hand-made stakes of uniform height. One of the great dangers in the transfer of logs is found in the fact that the stakes, as usually applied, have to he almost sawed through by a man standing beside the car before the car arrives at the log dump, thus placing the life of the man in jeopardy since the logs may break loose before he has had time to get away; and also placing the train in danger, as the logs may fall off from the car while being transferred from the point where the stakes have been sawed to the log dump. Besides this, my device can be operated much faster than all the stakes on the car can be sawed.
Having, therefore, described my invention, what I blaim is:
1. In a car stake, the combination of a car body, a series of stake pockets secured thereto, vertically hollow car stakes within said pockets and having a vertical series of holes through the inner side thereof to form a rack, a shaft extending longitudinally along ysaid car, gear wheels mounted on said shaft and engaging said holes, and a ratchet dog and wheel adapted to hold said shaft from turning.
2. A car stake formed of a hollow piece of metal and having a vertical series of holes formed in one side thereof to form a rack.`
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
DANIEL E. FLORY.
