DUMPINGLCAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,298, dated December 1S, 1883.
' Application led September 2B, 1883. (No model.)
.T0 all wiz/0m it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. WHEELocK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, Alameda county, State of California, have invented a new and Improved Dump-Car, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to -those ears used in mining, grading, and for general excavating purposes, which are required to tip over the box or body, independent of the truck to which the wheels are attached, in the act of discharging the load. .Y
It consists in the combination of machinery by which the dumping is effected, the object being to keep the height of the car within the limit required by the truck-frame and car-body, and not occupy-any of the height with the dumping machinery-a desideratum in cases where the car has to enter low-roofed tunnels-and also to obtainasimple, cheap, and effective device for 'the purpose intended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end view, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, of my invention.
In both gures like letters of reference refer to like parts.
A is the ear-box, made in ordinary fashion. B is the swinging door at the dumping side, which is fastened with the cross-bar C. This bar C swings on a pivot at D, and each end passes into the latches E, which are fastened on the frame-posts F. The ordinary guides for the bar are fastened on the door itself.
Gr is the truck-frame.
H are the wheels, which turn upon their respective axles, the axles being rigidly held in boxes secured on the under sideof the truck.
I I are rollers, which are provided with short axles which turn in suitable metal boxes properly secured in position upon the truckframe, as shown. Upon these rollers the dumping side of the car-body rests, the opposite side resting squarely on the truck-frame, the blocks T being interposed.
J J are toothed racks, which are fastened to the car-bodyunderneath at each end. With these racks there engage two cam shaped toothed quadrants, K K. The quadrants are secured in proper position upon the square shaft L, which runs the entire length of the truck-frame, about two inches to one side of the center line, or four inches nearer the dumping side than the opposite side.- This square shaft is supported in boxes M on the truck-frame, and has two hand-levers, N N, which serve to turn it in operating to dump and return the car-box to its normal position.
O is a chain, which connects the car-box with the truck-frame. Its oflice is to prevent the car-box from .being inclined in dumping the load to a greater distance than the length of this chain will permit.
l? P are fiat bars attached to underneath the box of the oar, and resting on each of the three rollers. At a proper point each bar yis provided with a hook-shaped stop, Q, which, when the car-box is moved sufficiently far sidewise to be in a position to dump the load, the stop strikes against the rollers and prevents further movement, except in the matter of tipping the car-box over.
The door of the car is suspended on bolts at R.
The car needs no locking device to prevent tipping over or moving sidewise when in transit, for inasmuch as the whole body rests fairly on the broad support ofthe truck-frame .and the rollers, there is no tendency to tip over, and before any side movement is possible the car-box, with its load, must be actually lifted to enable it to be rolled on the rollers.
The operation is simple and as follows: The door is closed and made fast when the car is loaded. Afterward, when the car is rolled to its dumping-place, the door-fastening is swung out, to allow the door to open, when the operator, at one or the other end of the car, throws over the hand-lever, which, through the connected machinery, effects the dumping by lirst raising the car-bodyl just enough to cause the whole Weight to come on the rollers and the quadrants, and to lift the wooden stop-blocks T above the truck-frame,
and then rolling the car-body over until it loses its balance and tips over to spill out the contents. The chain will cheek the carl bars P, having east upon them the hookzo body from attaining such a position as'to fall shaped stops Q, which lit the periphery of the off from the truck-frame entirely. rollers, so that the oar may be tilted Wit-h the What I Claim as my invention, and desire smooth :L-Xles of the rollers for an axis, sub- 5 to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows: l stantially as and for the purpose described. 1.
