Description

NITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PIETER HONDIUS, or UTREOHT, NETHERLANDS.
PROCESS OF IMPREGNATI'NG TOBACCO BY MEANS OF NATURALOR ARTIFICIAL AROMATIC SUBSTANCES.
' the Netherlands, residing at Utrecht, Buys Ballotstraat 5* in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes for the Impregnation of Tobacco byMeans of Natural or Artificial Aromatic Substances or Organic Salts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The quality and value of tobaccos depend upon their certain materials, which influence the burning of the tobacco and the color of the ash.
I have found that the value of tobacco leaves can be favorably influenced by their impregnation with substances which are contained in superior kinds of tobacco and the quality of inferior tobaccos can in this way therefore be raised to a higher value.
This invention consists in the method of improving the burning quality and flavor of badly burning cigars by impregnating parts thereof with an extract of tobacco of good burning quality and of a flavor superior to that of the cigars treated.
In practice the following is the process used :Waste cuttings of the leaves, stalks,
and ribs, or other residues of the tobacco factory, of good burning tobacco and tobaccos rich in organic salts, such as Deli-Langkat, Sumatra, or the like, are used, and are soaked in water and the solution or extract obtained is concentrated by boiling, so that about a 10 per cent solution is obtained. The 10 per cent extract thus obtained then serves for the impregnation of inferior-burning kinds of tobacco, such for example as Rio Grande, Java, Telock, Java, S. K., Deli and Slamat, Borneo. These last named kinds of tobacco are those which are preferably to be treated according to the new process, but other kinds of tobacco of inferior burning quality can be very greatly improved by the use of the extract obtained in the way, and from the superior tobaccos above described. This improvement is effected by treating the inferior kinds of tobacco named, for a certain time, for example, 24 hours, with a ten per cent solution of the extract which is prepared from good burning tobacco, as already mentioned. effect the neutralization of the nicotin, as
this is present especially in the inner part of or filling and any attempted improvement in the quality of the cigars themselves which may be made according to the processes heretofore employed, is not all aimed at in the present invention, in which the good-burning of the envelop or wrapping an outer covering is alone aimed at and effected. To improve in this way the burning of the cigar it is necessary, according to the process of the present invention to prepare an aqueous extract of the more or less waste parts of good-burning and more valuable kinds of tobacco, suchfor example as Deli-Langkat, Sumatra, and 1 solution containing for example, about 10 per cent of the material thus extracted for a determined time, about 24 hours.
The most successful method for the preparation of the extract is carried out as follows :--An extract is made from cuttings of the leaves or other suitable parts of good burning tobacco, by means of water, and this extract is then concentrated vby heat, the injurious inflammable substances such as albumen and the like being removed by drawing them off, skimming or filtering and the so-prepared extract is thickened by evaporation in vacuo until a viscous dark brown syrup containing crystals is obtained. By further inspissation a more or less solid greyish-white mass results, which like the syrup is easy to transport from place quired.
When required for use a suitable quantity of thesyrup or product of the kind described is thinned downwith water and the kinds of inferior burning tobacco to be treated are impregnated with it for a sufficiently long time, quality and of a flavor superior to that of the IO or instance, for one day. cigars treated.
