No. 85,823. Patented Jan. 12, 1869.

Letters Patent .Nm 85,823, dated January/ 12, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAD-G-REASING- APPARATUS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom tt may con-cern.-
Be it known t lat I, A. C. HOBBS, o'f Bridgeport, in the county of Faireld, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and usefulV Improvements in Machinery for Greasing Gun-Wads and l do hereby deel are that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication, and to the letters oi' reference marked thereon; like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
l My invention consists in a novel construction of an apparatus ior gieasing gun-wads as they are cut from the sheet, and in so applying the grease to the wads as that they shall be greased or saturated around their edge or periphery only, as hereinafter more fully explained.
` Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section,
Figure 2 is a top plan view, and
Eigure is a face view of a wad, completed.
To make my improved apparatus, I provide a metallic bed-piece, A, and form a recess or cavity, B, inv its upper face, as represented in iig. 1, this cavity thus forming a cup or receptacle for the grease, or lubricating-lnaterial.
ln order to keep the grease melted, or in a fluid state, l form a cavity or passage, C, in thc raised portion of the plate A, surroundillg the cup B, into which a cury rent of steam is admitted at lone end,.fron1 whence it passes around vthe cup, and escapes at the opposite side ofthe same end. at which it entered, as indicated by the dotted lines and arrows in g. 2. A
rlhrough the bottom of the cup B, I make a series of holes, and secure therein tubes D, corresponding in diameter, internally, with the diameter of the wads to be greased; these tubes D, having a series ofhorizontal slits, a, cut in them, just above the bottom ot' the cup B, as shown in iig. l.
The cutters, consisting of a series oi' steel tubes or punches, I, are secured in aplate, E, which rests upon the bed-plate A, over the cup B, where it is secured by a wedge, o, as shown in tig. 2, or in any suitable manner, the punches l being placed directly over the tubes l), the two thds ibrming continiums tubes, as represented in iig. l.
To secure accuracyin this respect, the upper ends ofthe tubes D are permitted to extend a sh'ort distance up into the plate E, where they abut aga-inst the lower ends ofthe punches I.
These devices, thus constructed, constitute the iniprovements contained in my apparatus.
In using it, the sheet of material from which the the punches, so that it can be fed along `for anotherv cut, and so on continuously.
These features being well known, and in common use, need not be herein further described.
The operation is as follows The sheet being fed along, and the wadscontinuously or successively cut therefrom, are forced down into the tubes D, as indicated by the blue lines on the leit-handtube of tig. 1. As the wads are thus forced down, the grease runs through the slits a, and, coming in contact with the edges of the wads, greases them, one after another, as they pass down by the slits u', the wads being forced out at the lower open ends ofthe tubes D.
It will be observed that the slits c are arranged in two rows, in such a manner as to break joints, the slits in one row coming opposite the spaces between the slits in the other row, so as to permit the grease to flow through lall around, and thus come in contact with the entire periphery of the wad. y
By this arrangement, there is just enough grease used to thoroughly grease the entire edge ci' the wad, without saturating the entire body, the greased part thus forming a ring around the outer edge of the wad, as indicated, or shown in tig. 3, the colored portion representing the greased part, thus greasing only that part required, and effecting a great economy of the lubricating-material, as well as of the labor necessary to perform the operation.
Having thusdescribed my invention,
Vhat I claim, is-
l. The plate A, provided with the reservoir for containing the grease, and the steam-passage C, for keeping the same warm, or in a duid state, and the perfo.
rated tubes D, when arranged to operate .substantially 'as and for the purpose herein described.
2. The combination of the plate A, constructed as above described, with the plate E, having the punches I securedtherein, substantially as `set forth.
A. O. HOBBS.
