JET REGULATOR FOR GAS COCKS Fiied July 1, 1924 Patented Feb. 10, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIS G. HASKELL, JR, OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO JOHNSON GAS AP- PLIANCE COMPANY, OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA.
JET REGULATOR FOR GAS COCKS.
Application filed July 1, 1924. Serial No. 723,521,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLis G. HASKELL, J12, a. citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Jet Regulator for Gas Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of jet regulators for gas cocks in which a solid V jet of gas passes directly through the center of the jet regulator at maximum jet velocity, and which may be instantly adjusted as to volume without changing the jet velocity, such for instance as disclosed in the patents to Johnson, No. 923,531, dated June 1, 1909 and No. 831,512, dated Sept. 18, 1906.
The object of my invention is to provide a jet regulator of simple, durable and inexpensive construction that may be formed complete of sheet metal by the use otdies and formers, and which may be readily, quickly and easily applied to and fitted in a gas cook, and when once fitted will firmly be held against accidental misplacement, and yet at all times be capable of being readily, quickly and easily adjusted to regulate the How of gas into the mixer.
My invention consists in the construction,
arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a vertical, central, sectional view of a gas cook and mixer having my improved jet regulator applied thereto as in use.
Figure 2 shows a top or plan view of a sheet metal blank from which my improved jet regulator may be formed.
Figure 3 shows an edge elevation of same to illustrate the beveled discharge end formed on the sheet metal before the blan is out out.
Figure 4 shows a side elevation of my improved jet regulator detached.
Figure 5 shows an enlarged sectional View of a portion of a gas cook and regulator cap thereon and my improved jet. regulator in position therein.
Figure 6 shows an end elevation of my improved jet regulator with the members members contracted to their thereof expanded to their maximum open position; and
Figure 7 shows a similar view with the maximum closed position.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate generally a gas cook 01 ordinary construction. It is connected at one end to a gas supply pipe 11 and provided on its side opposite from the gas pipe with a hollow extension through which the gas is discharged into the mixer 12 of ordinary construction. The discharge extension of the gas cock is indicated generally by the reference numeral 13 and is screw threaded on its exterior and is formed on its interior with an annular chamber 14:. Mounted on the screw threaded exterior is the regulator cap 15 of ordinary construction and having at its outer end a round discharge opening through which the jet regulator may project.
The jet regulator is formed complete of a single piece of sheet metal. In constructing the jet regulator, I preferably provide a piece of flat sheet spring metal 16 and bevel one edge thereof at 17, as shown in Figure 3. I then cut the metal with suitable dies to form the body portion 18, as shown in Figure 3, and four regulator members 19 we tend from the side of the part 18 and are separated by the spaces 20, the outer ends being tapered at 21. In this connection, attention is called to the fact that the part 18 projects at 22 a. short distance beyond the adjacent side edge of the regulator member 19. When the sheet metal has been thus cut out, it is rolled in a cylindrical shape, and its tapered ends 21 are rounded inwardly toward the longitudinal center of the jet regulator, as illustrated in Figure 4.
WVhen thus completed, the device is of substantially cylindrical form and at the point where the two edges of the sheet metal. come together, the resiliency of the metal holds them slightly spaced apart, forming the longitudinal slot 23, as shown in Figure 4:.
In assembling the jet regulator, the 0perator slightly compresses the sides of the regulator, bringing the adjacent edges thereof close together, and then inserts it in the cylindrical chamber 1d, and when inserted the resiliency of 'themetal tends to expand and hold it on the interior of the chamber l-l. in any position in which it may be placed. Then the regulator cap 15 is screwed into position, and after it has seen screwed part way back upon the discharge extension of the gas cock. the walls of its orifice will engage the end of the jet regulator and cause the jetregulator to more towards the gas Ck, and this operation is preferably continued until the regulator cap engages the adjacent shoulder of the gas cock, and when this has been done the jet regulator has been moved to its pi per position within'the chamber 1- and its discl urge end is in its closed position, as illustrated in Figure '7.
hen it is desired to open the jet "egulater, the regulator cap is unscrewed to the desired point for permitting the ends of the jetregnlator to expand to the desired amount. After the jet regulator has once been placed in proper position as described, then the regulator cap may be moved inwardly or outwardly to open or close the jet. regulator without in any way etiecting the position of the ct regulator within the chamber 14; in the gas cock, because when the regulator cap is moved toward the gas cock, it wil tend to contract the outer ends 05 the jet regulator, as indicated by the arrows near the outer end of Figure and when this is done, the shoulder at 22 will form a fulcrum. thus tending to expand the rear end ofthe jet regulator, as shown by the arrows in Figure at the rear of the regulator, and this will cause suliicient triction 0;! the jet regulator against the inner walls of the chamber M to firmly hold the jet regulator against longitudinal movement until the jet regulator is at its maximum closing position.
l'leretoloro jet regulators of this cl'iaracter have been made oi? tubular metal and torincd by z sawing and grinding process. and this process has been expensive and subject to considerable variation so that a relatively large proportion of the regulators were defective. My iniprowd form of jet regulater,v however, may be readily and easily made from sheet meta-lb dies and lorn'iers of the ordinary kind, and when thus mace, there are substantially no detective j ct regulators.
iVith jet. regulators ot the kind heretofore used, it has been necessary to provide a mains for accurately regulating the distance to which the jet regulators are projected into the chamber of the cock, and hence the length or the chamber 14; had to be regulated with great. accuracy, and the length of the jet regulator also had to be correspondingly accurate: whereas with my improvement the chamber 14 may be made materially deeper than the length 01 the jet regulator. and
by having a jet regulator made of spring sheet metal with one side open and a shoulder 22 midway between the ends thereof at the open side, then the jet regulator may be readily, quickly and easily assembled within the chamber 1 t, and each jet regulator auto matically assumes its proper position within the chamber 14 without any special care or attention on the part of the operator, or Vfitlltlllt} any great accuracy in the proper proportioning of the length of the chambe relative to the length of the jet regulator.
l h we, therefore, provided a device of this character that is not only much. cheaper to manufacture than the ones heretofore used, but ca be assembled in a gas coca readily and quickly by unskilled workmen, and when once assembled will retain their proper relative positions for accurately working, and will not be eti' ected by repeated manipulation of the regulator cap.
I claim as my invention:
1. in a device of the class described, the combination of a gas cock having cylindrical discharge chamber, a hollow jet regulator n'iounted in said cylindrical chamber, a regulator cap adjustably mounted on the gas cock and formed with an opening, said jet reg ator being formed with tapered outer end. designed to project tl'irough the opening in the regulator cap, and said parts being so arranged that when the regulatm cap moved toward the gas cock and the tapered outer ends thereof thereby moved e ch oth the rear portion oi the jet regulator will be expanded or moved outb o lu'mer engagement with the inwai dry int tcrior of the gas cock.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a gas cock having a cylindrical discharge chamber, a hello jet regulator mounted in said cylindrical chamber. a regulating cap adjustably mounted on the gas cock and formed with an opening, said jet regulator being formed ot sheetmetal divided longitudinally at one side and formed with a shoulder on one of its edges designed to engage the opposite edge, said jet regulator being also formed with tapered outer encs designed to project through the opening in the regulator cap, the adjacent sides of the jet regulator from said shoulder to the dischargecnd thereof being spaced apartsuch distance from each other that, when the regulator cap is moved to position for ln'inging together the discharge end portions of the jet regulator the said-shoulder will serve as a fulcrum and the rear end oi the jet regulator will be forced outwardly to 'trictionally engage and hold the jet regulator against lon itudinal inoveu'ient' within the chamber.
