Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENNING- PETERSEN, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Thief River Falls, in the county of Red Lake and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Clamp or Grip, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for gripping or clamping Wires, cables, and the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an exceedingly simple article of manufacture that will constitute an effective clamp for guys, wire stretchers, hitching devices and the like, is readily applicable to the article to be clamped, and when in place and strain is applied thereto, will not slip and will not injure the article upon which itis clamped.
The preferred form of construction is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherem Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device showing the same clamped upon a cable; Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view therethrough on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the structure showing the same applied to a guy cable; Fig. 5 is a top-plan view showing the device employed in a stump puller.

In the embodiment illustrated, straight jaws 6 are employed that are disposed in parallel relation and are in the form of bars having straight longitudinal recessed seats 7 in.
their opposing inner faces. The ends of these jaws are provided with enlarged rounded ears 8, thereby producing curved ends against which a cable will bear Without being cut. The jaws at one end of the device are connected by links 9 located on opposite sides of said ends and secured to the jawsjand to each other by rivets or pivot pins 10 passing through the adjacent ears. The jaws at the other end are connected by a yoke, the same consisting of an eye 11 having oppositely extending shoulders 12, from which project parallel integral legs 13. These legs embrace the adjacent ends of the jaws and are secured thereto and to each other by pivot pins or rivets 14 that pass through the adjacent ears 8. If desired, a link 15 may be located in the eye ll, this eye being disposed in a plane that passes longitudinally through the centers of the jaws and being located at one side of said jaws, as clearly shown.
The device may be employed for a variety of purposes. Thus, in Fig. 4 a guy cable 16 is disclosed, this cable being passed longitudinally through the jaws and about a pulley 17 or other device attached to an anchor 18, the end of the cable being secured to the link 15. With this arrangement, when the links and legs are disposed at right angles to the jaws, the cable is loose between said jaws and the clamp can be moved longitudinally upon said cable, but when strain is applied to the eye, the links are moved to a diagonal position with respect to the awe, and consequently said jaws are moved toward each other and will clam firmly upon the cable. Moreover because 0 the single connection at one end of the device, said device will assume an angular relation with respect to the cable, and the clamping action will thus be all the more secure. Therefore, it is preferable to have the ends of the seats 7 flared in order to avoid all danger of cutting the cable.
As another illustration of the use of the device, attention is invited to Fig. 5, wherein a cable 19 is shown as laced around a stump 20 or other article to e moved. The power for moving the stump is derived from draft animals hitched to the whifiietree 21 and the hook 22 of this whifiietree is engaged in the link 15 of the clamp, said clamp being placed upon the free end of the cable'19. It will be evident that the action of this device, in this instance, is exactly the same as thatalready described, and it will be evident to those skilled in the art that the clamp can be suc* cessfully employed in a variety of ways.
