Letters Patent No. 85,793, dated Janna/ry 12, 1869.
IMPROVE!) RAILROAD-CARLAXLE BOX. f-M .The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, JoHN O. Granen, of Omaha City, in the county of Douglas, and State oi' Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railroad- Oar Oil-Boxes; and I do-herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, referencelbeinghad tothe accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
. This invention relates to improvements in the construction of railroad-car oil-boxes, the object of which is 4to cheapen the cost` of the same. l
It consists of an improved fonn in which the box and its cover are cast, whereby, when the one is hinged to the other'by a singleipivot, a close-fitting jointis obtained, Without the expense of other finishing.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved box, and
Figure 2 represents a, sectional elevation of theV same,
A taken on the line xx ofg. 1.
Similarlctters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the shell ofthe box, which is provided with the projection B, and-"with the bead or rib C around the lower portion thereof, which is so formed in its connection with the shell of the box, in the casting thereof', as to provide the curved recesses or groove D for the reception of the curved end ofthe cover.
E represents the cover, which is provided with`a pro jection, F, corresponding with the projection B on the box, and through whichv it is hinged to the 'box by a bolt or pin, G.
Thesides of the' said cover are provided with beads, corresponding to the bead O on the box, and form the continuation ofthe latter when in the closed position The radius of the xcurve of the bottom of the boxand the groove D is less than that of the centre, on which the cover swings, and the opening of the groove into space at the4 one side, as at H, is suiiiciently low t .to allow the cover to swing in that directionTto open the box, while on the other side it is of suiicient height to arrest the movement of the cover in that direction, w-hen in a closed condition.
The lower part of the cover, below the beads, shuts into the groove D, as will be clearly understood, and the form o1' angle of the ends of the several sections of the bead may be that best calculated to insure close fitting joints. K
It is not essential, however, that the door be pro vided with a' bead.
-The walls of the groove may be inclined, so as to wedge the cover down tightly when closed.
Having thus described my invention,
l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Thebox A and cover E, constructed, arranged, and combined together, substantially as and for the purpose described.
