Description

PATBNTED JUNE 18, 1907.
R. L. TU'RMAN.
n TRUNK. APPLICATION FILED HAR. 15, 19071 :Rs co.. wAsHmuwN. n. c.
ROBERT L. TURMAN, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
TRUNK.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Application led March 16, 1907. Serial No. 362.521.
Patented June 18, 1907.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. TURMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and use-l ful Improvements in Trunks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
My invention relates to improvements in trunks, and the object of my invention is to provide a sim le device, whereby when the lid of the trun is opened the tray will be elevated, and furthermore, whereby the backward movement of the lid and tray will be stopped after the lid has been raised a suflicient distance.
With this object in view, my invention consists in the construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trunk in its open position, showing thev tray elevated, and Fig. 2 is a central cross section thereof with the tray removed.
a represents the' body of a trunk of any approved design, to which is secured by means of hinges an ordinary lid l).
c represents a tray of the usual or any preferred construction, exce t that the front part of said tray is bevele 0H, as shown at d, so that as the lid is opened and closed the tray will not interfere with the movement.
Fastened to the interior of the body of the trunk, on each side thereof, are brackets e, each of which is bent at right angles, as shown at f to provide a stop, so that the lid of the trunk can not move backward beyond the position shown in Fig. 2. The attachment to the trunk is exactly the same on each side, so that only one of these attachments will be described.
link, and a lin g represents a link, pivoted at h to the interior of one end of the trunk. The pivot h is above the bracket e, and the lower end of the link g is adapted, when the lid is thrown up, to strike againstthe stopf, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper end of the link gis pivoted, as shown at t to a tray support. This tray support is provided with a horizontal bottom y', a vertical side l, and ends m and n, the whole forming a su port into which one end of the tray exactly ts.
The rear end of the tray support is supported by a link o, which is ivotally attached at p to the lid of the trun tened by means of pins g to the tray support. Two pins are used to attach the part o to the tray support, in order that there shall be no relative motion between said support and the link 0, so that the tray support will always be kept in a vertical position, whether the lid is opened or closed, and while it is being opened or closed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination of a trunk body, brackets fastened to said body and rovided with right angled portions exten ing into said body, a link at each end of said body pivoted thereto above said brackets and having its lower end adapted in certain positions to abut against the projecting end of one of said brackets, a tray support pivoted near one end to said rigidly attached at one end to the other end of said tray support, said link being pivotally attached at its other end to the trunk lid, substantially as described.
In testimonywhereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT LQ TURMAN.
