Description
UNITED `STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM F. PABSTAND WILLIAM WEST, DENVER, COLORADO, ASSIGNORS TO BENJAMIN F. SEYMOUR, JR., OF DENVER, COLORADO.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J' une 18, 1907.
Appiicaion flied March 6,1905. serial No. 248,471.
, To (LZ/f whom it 11G/wy concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM F. PABsT and WILLIAM WEST, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Denver, inthe county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Self-Locking Safety-Cock, of which the following is a full,4 clear, and exact description.
The invention consists of novel .features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention l is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a side elevation of the improvement with the valve-plug in a closed position; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same, on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 showing the valveplug in closed and locked position; Fig. 3 is a sectional side "elevation 0f the same, showing the valve-plug in an open position; Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of. the same showing the valve-plug in open position, Fig. 5 is a perspective lview of the tool for unlocking the valve-plug.
The valve-casing A of the cock is provided with the usual bore A for the passage of the fluid or liquid, and the said casing is also rovided with the usual valve-seat A2, in wliich is mounted to turn a valve-plug B having a diametrical passage B adapted to'register with the bore A, as shown in Fig. 3, the plug then being in an open position. When the valve-plug B is given a quarter turn, then the passage B moves out of register with the bore A and the cock is then in a closed position.
In order to lock the plug B securely in positionwhen moved from an open into a closed position as seen in Fig. 2, the following device is provided: In the lower end of the plug B is arranged a recess B2 for the reception of a locking-pin O, pressed on by a spring D set in the bottom of the recess B2. The outer end C of the locking-pin C is adapted to engage a recess A3 at the time the plug B is in a closed and-locked position, so that the locking-pin O holds the plug B locked in a closed position. The recess A3 is' formed in the wall of the seat A2, and from the inner end of the recess A3 leads a cam-surface A4, likewise formed in the wall of the seat A2 and terminating in a shoulder A5 which forms a stop for the outer end C of the locking-pin C at the time the plug B is in an open position, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. When the plug B is turned in the direction of the arrow a (see Fig. 4) then the end O of the pin O is caused by the cam-surface A4 to slide inwardly against the tension of the spring D, and when the plug B reaches a closed position the end O registers with the recess A3 and the locking `pin O is now projected outwardly by the action of the spring D, to engage the end O with the recess A3, to lock the plug B against turning in either direction. By reference to Figs. 2 and 4 it will be seen that the recess A3 stands in quarter position relative to the shoulder A5, so that the plug B can only be given a quarter turn, that is, from an open into a closed position, and vice versa.
In order to enable the operator to unlock the plug B a tool E is provided, shown in Fig. 5, and adapted to be inserted in a curved passage A6 formed in the casing A and leading from the outer surface thereof to the recess A3, so that when the tool E is pushed inward its inner end engages the end C of the locking-pin C, thus forcing the same inward against the tension of the spring D. When the end O of the locking-pin O leaves the recess A3, then the plug B is unlocked and can now be given a quarter turn in the inverse direction of the arrowa, to move the plug B from a closed into an open position,` the turning movement being limited by the end C finally abutting against the shoulder A5. It is understood that during this turning movement of the plug B the end C of the locking-pin travels on the cam-face A4, that lis, the pin O is projected outward by the action of the spring D. l
The passage A3 is preferably curved, to prevent it and the plug from being easily clogged up by dust or dirt, it being understood that the end of the tool E is correspondingly curved, to readily follow the passage in order to retract the locking-pin C, as above described. yFor this purpose the radialA recess A3 extends only a short dist ance into the casing from its inner wall and is practically covered and concealed by .the casing so that access can only be had to the locking-pin by the deflected passage which opens at the outer wall of the casing at one side of the said recess concealing it.
IOO
IIO
From the foregoing it Will be seen that ,l When the plug B is turned from an open into a closed position, the plug is automatically locked in a closed position and can only be opened by the operator inserting the proper tool E in the passage A6 and retracting the locking-pin C, as above explained.
Devicesfor looking and unlocking plugvalves to open and to close the plu '-port to provide a safety plug-cock which Wi l be automatically locked in its closed position and unlocked by a key, and in which the plug is locked to the casing by a spring pressed pin arranged to engage both and controlled eX- ternally to disengage the pin from the casing, in the operation of unlocking the plug, is old and public property in so far as the constructions for effecting this operation is disclosed in the state of the art. Our improvement While employing the spring pressed lockingpin provides a new co-operating construction in Which a radial recess and an eccentric recess both in the inner Wall of the casing and both meeting, provides the means by which the spring pressed-pin is caused to be self retracted to automatically lock the plug in its closed position and controlled in its open position and so far as I know and can find this is a new means for effectingan old object.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. In a self locking safety cock and including a plug valve having -a spring pressed radial locking-pin, a casing for said plugvalve having a radial recess in its inner Wall in registering relation With said valve-pin, and a recess starting from the inner end of said radial recess and having its Wall curving therefrom eccentrically outward and terminating in -a shoulder whereby in closing said valve the interior eccentric Wall causes the self retraction of said locking-pin to the position in which it is automatically locked.
2. In a self locking safety cock and including a lug-valve having a spring pressed radial ocking-pin, a casing for said plugvalve having a radial recess in its inner Wall in registering relation With said valve-pin and terminating in a deflected curved passage opening at the outer Wall at one side of said radial recess, and a recess starting from the inner end of said radial recess and having its Wall curving therefrom eccentrically outward and terminating in a shoulder, the said deflected passage being formed in the Wall Which serves to cover and to conceal the locking-pin. y
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
