Be it known that I, WVILLIAM MCBRIDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anchors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to foldable anchors, and has for its primary object the provision of improved means for fastening the parts thereof in their opened or closed position.
A convenient embodiment of the 'inven tion comprises, the combination with the shank and foldable stock or fluke arms, of an anchor, of a pivot pin for said arms having a head or abutment at one end, and an adjustable fastening device at the other, whereby said arms may be clamped in their opened or closed position.
More specifically, the invention further consists in providing the pivot bolt above referred to with means for preventing turning of the same while the fastening device (preferably a nut engaging a threaded portion of said bolt) is being adjusted, and means for preventing complete separation of the fastening device from the bolt, whereby accidental removal of the bolt from operative association with the foldable arms and shank is permanently prevented.
The foregoing as well as other novel features of construction and arrangement will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter contained, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein the before referred to embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawings: Figure l is a plan view of the anchor, Fig. 2 is a side elevation, Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the inner or disk portions of the fluke arms; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged elevation of the lower portion of Fig. 2 with the head of the clamping bolt removed.
Referring more specifically to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the several views, A represents the shank, B the opposite arms of the stock and G the opposite arms of the flukes of an anchor which may be of any ordinary or preferred. type, and formed of any desired material. As shown, both the arms B and C are pivoted and. adapted to be opened to the position shown in full lines or closed to the position shown in dotted lines, the means for pivotally securing the stock arms to the shank being indicated at D, and the means for correspondingly pivoting the fluke arms, at E. Inasmuch as these pivoting means D and E are identical in construc tion and arrangen'ient, a description of one will su'l'lice for both, and therefore, in the following matter reference will be had only to the pivoting of the lluke arms \Vith especial reference to Figs. 3 and 4., it will be noted that the adjoining ends of the shank A and arms C which constitute the crown portion F of the anchor, are respectively formed into substantially circular disks 1 adapted to be superposed whereby their apertured central portions II may register for the reception and free passage of a clamping bolt J. This clamping bolt has a head K at one end forming an abutment adapted to engage the outer surface of the disk G of one of the fluke arms, and a threaded opposite end .IJ adapted tobe adjustably engaged. by a clamping nut M for forcibly impinging upon the outer surface of the disk G of the opposite fluke arm C to clamp said arms opened or closed, as is obvious.
To facilitate the adjustl'nent of the nut M upon the bolt J, the latter is prevented from turning through the medium of a lug N projeeting inwardly from the head Ii and engaging a complementary notched portion in the outer face of the disk against which said. head abuts. It will be noted from Fig. 3 that the lug N is of a length greater than the range of adjustment of the nut M on the threaded stem L of the bolt J whereby the lug is at all times in engagement with the notched portion 0 to be continually held against rotation.

Owing to the arrangement above described, it will be appreciated that the arms of the anchor may be opened or closed, as the case may be, and securely fastened in their posi- 1 tion, easily and expeditiously, and by means of a simple and durable arrangement of parts. i A highly desirable characteristic of the l present invention resides in the provision of means for preventing complete separation of the clamping nut M from the pivot bolt J, this means in the present instance, being a riveted or offset portion Q at the end of the bolt constituting an enlargement positively preventing the unscrewing of said nut from the bolt, while permitting adequate play of the former to enable the parts to be loosened and the arms adjusted.
I claim:
1. The combination with a shank and fold able member of an anchor, of means for pivoting said member including a bolt having an abutment at one end, and a threaded portion at its opposite end, said member having a slotted portion and the bolt having a lug adapted to engage said slotted-portion, and a clamping nut engaging the threaded portion of the bolt whereby the member may be clamped in position, in combination with means for preventing complete separation of the clamping nut from the bolt arranged to restrict the range of movement of the nut to an extent less than the length of the lug on the bolt whereby to constantly preserve the engagement between said lug and slotted portion of the foldable member to hold the bolt against turning movement during'the adjustment of the clamping nut.
2. The combination with a shank and foldable member of an anchor, of means for pivoting said member including a bolt having an abutment at one end and a threaded portion at its opposite end, and. a clamping nut engaging said threaded portion whereby said member may be clamped in position, in combination with co-operating instrumentalities between said bolt, and a part of the anchor holding said bolt against rotary movement during the adjustment of the clamping nut, and means for preventing complete separation of the clamping nut from the bolt arranged to restrict the range of movement of the nut whereby to constantly preserve said co-operating instrumentalities in operating.

3. The combination with a shank and foldable member of an anchor, of means for pivoting said member comprising a threaded bolt having a clamping nut thereon, whereby the member may be held in position, the bolt bein extended a substantial distance beyoncI the nut in its clamping osition to en able the nut to be released om clamping position without removal from the bolt, and means on the bolt for preventing accidental removal of the nut therefrom, in combination with means preventing rotary movement of the bolt when the nut is being adjusted.
