W rsa JOHN F. SANFORD, OF KEOKUK, IOWA.
Letters Patent No. 85,697, dated January 5, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BURNERS.
The Schedule referred to In these Letters Patent and making part0! the am- To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, JOHN F. SANFORD, of Keokuk,
' in the county of Lee, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Lamp-Burners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
. reference being bad to the accompanying drawings,
Figure 5 shows the finished burner, with its clasps and chimney-supports and holders.
Figure 6 is a side view of figxfi. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists inconstrncting a flanged cone with holding-clasps, for attaching it to a wick-tube, and .also with chimney-supports, all of one piece of metal,
by so shaping the metal that it can be readily bent, so as to produce the said clasps and supports, as will be he'reinaflaer explained; I
- To enable others skilled in the art to understand my I invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
By means of machinery suitably adapted for the purpose, I stamp, from a sheet of metal, a piece or plate, corresponding in form substantially to that rep resented in figs. 1 and 2.
v A A represent a flanged cone or a slotted cone, A, surrounded, at its base, by a circular flange or rim, A.
From this rim,'and at equal distances apart, open arms, a, extend radially, having short pieces, a, formed within them, and attached to the periphery of flangeA, as shown.
Armsb b, arranged diametrically opposite each other, are also formed on said flange or rim A, the ends of which terminate in enlargements b b, as shown.
In order to attach the flanged cone to a wick-tube, two clasping-arms are required, and these I produce by bending down and cin-ving the arms I) b, and bending down and curving the portions 7) b, so as to form, of these latter portions, clasps, which will receive a wick-tube between them, and embrace it with suflicient firmness to sustain the flanged cone and chimney.
Figs. 3 and 4 show clearly the convergent supporting-arms, with clasps formed on their ends.
The next operation is to produce the chimney-holders, and this is done by bending down the radial arms a, and curving them, so as to form U-shaped stirrups, depending from the edge-of flange A, for receiving the bottom edge of a chimney, and supporting the same. The tongues a' are then bent upward and suitably curved, so as to press outwardly, with gentle force, against a lamp-chimney seated in stirrups a, and thus hold such chimney steady.
This burner is designed for use in connection with a chimney having a cylindrical base or lower portion, which is supported by the stirrups a, so as to extend below. the flange A, and form a skirting for concentrating the draught of air on its way to the flame.
This burner is also designed to be applied to a wicktube, so that there can be a free circulation of air beneath it, and to do this the clasping-arms, above described, are necessary for attaching the burner to this tube, without oflering material obstructionto the ascent of the currents of air to the flame.
I do not desire to be understood as claiming, under this patent, the general plan of employing either the supports or the clasping-arms in connection with'a cone, as I have claimed such general plan under another application for a patent, filed October 13, 1868; it being my intention, under this patent, to limit my claims to having the flanged cone under clasping-arms, or the flanged cone and lower. hook-supports, or the flanged cone and the upper and lower supports, or the flanged cone, clasping-arms, and supports, made in one piece, as herein described; I
Having described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl 1. A flanged cone A A, and clasping-arms b'b, made of one piece of sheet-metal, substantially as described.
2. A flanged cone, A A, and chimney-supports a, which are of a hook-form, all made of one piece of metal, substantially as described.
3. A lamp-burner, consisting ofa flanged cone, clasping-arms, and chimney-supports, produced from a sin- ,gle piece of metal, substantially as described.
4. A flanged cone, A A, and upper and lower chimney-supports or stays a and a, made out of one piece of metal, in the manner shown and described.
Witness my hand; in matter of my application for a patent for improved mode of constructing lamp-burners, this 9th day of October, 1868.
JNO. F. SANFORD.
