UNITED sTATns PATENT OFFICE.
BASE FOR STOVES OR RANGES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application filed February 8,1907. Serial No. 356,357.
T0 a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be itgknown that I, MATTHEW FRANKLIN ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Base for Stoves or Ranges, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to range constructions such as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States, No. 809,766, granted to me January 9, 1906.
The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved base for shete metal stoves and ranges, arranged to increase the strength and durability of the body of the stove or range, to dispense with separate base bands, and to render the manufacture of the stove or range exceedingly economical.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of one corner of the base of the stove or range; Fig. 2 is a like view of the same with the corner piece removed Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the improvement on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the body, on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of the improvement on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
The body A of the stove or range has its side walls formed of an integral sheet of metal, preferably steel, bent to produce corners A, and an integral base A2 formed of the outwardly and downwardly extending portion A3, terminating at its lower end in the upright or vertical portion A4 provided at its lower edge with inwardly extending flanges A5.
In order to allow of formino" the base A2 as described, the corners of the Lbase are cut or split previous to bending the base portions in the shape described, and the cut or split corner portion of the base is covered by a corner piece B likewise made of metal and con forming to the shape of the portions A3, A, the upper end B of the corner iece B extending onto the corner A', as pIainly indicated m Fig. 1. The sides of the corner piece B extend onto the sides of the base A3 adjacent to the split or cut portion, and bolts or other suitable fastening devices C, C rigidly secure the corner piece B in place, that is, the fastening devices C engage the sides of the corner piece B and the vertical portion A4 of the base, while the fastening device C engages the upper end B of the corner piece and the corner A of the body A.
By reference to Figs. 2 and 3, it will be seen that by the arrangement described the inwardly extending flanges A5 do not need to overlap as is the case in the construction shown and described in the Letters Patent above referred to. Now by forming the base A2 of the body A integral with the latter and in the manner described, an exceedingly strong and durable base is provided, capable of withstanding strains in all directions, especially as the base is reinforced at the corners by the corner pieces B, which in addition also give an ornamental appearance to the body A of the stove or range.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A range having a body formed of sheet metal, having its corners split vertically at the bottom, the walls of the range being bent outwardly from the upper end of the split and downwardly in a plane parallel to the Walls and inwardly to form a sup orting flange, and a corner piece covering t 1e split portion and conforming to the shape of the corner, the upper end of the corner piece extending on to the non-split corner portion of the body, and fastening means for securing the sides of the corner piece to the sides of the body, and the said upper end to the corner of the body.
2. A stove or range having a body formed of sheet metal, the lower portion being split at the corner and bent outward said outwardly bent portion having inwardly extending flanges, a corner piece covering the split portion and conforming to the shape of the TOO corner, the upper ehd of the corner piece name to this specoation in the presence of etekldilg onto the JEon-split corner porton tWo subscribing Witnesses. o t e ody, an astenng means or securing the sides of the comer piece to the MATTHEW FRANKLIN ALLEN' 5 sides of the body and the said upper end` to Vtnesses:
the oornerot the body. W. H. ALLEN,
In testimony whereof I have signed my 1 l A. E. FRANCK.
