TO all when@ it 11i/(ty concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. HOPKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Soda Springs, in the county of Bannock, State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Fails; and I do hereby declare the following te be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in milk pails, and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive article ol this kind which will effectively prevent the contents from spilling in case the pail should be accidentally upset or tilted.
The particular improvement consists in the provision of a double valve attached to the under side of the pail top, the valve members being located at right angles to each other and movable looselyT in their bearings, the lower end of said valve members being su'fiiciently weighted to cause the same to swing on their axis from their normal or open osition when the pail is tilted or upset and t ius automatically close the communication between the pail and its top.
Vith this and other objects in view, the device consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is an elevation of a milk pail constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a similar section at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view on an enlarged scale and partly in section of the double valve.
Corresponding parts are designated by like reference numerals in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the pail consists of the receptacle or body 6, and the top 7, said top including a vertical flange S extending completely around the same and having a transverse extension 9 carrying a spout 10 having a threaded cap 11, there being an opening in the transverse extension within the spout for communication with the receptacle or pail proper. The cover is likewise provided with a plate 12 extending partially across the same, as shown in Fig. 3, and connected to the inner side of the flange. A vertical plate 13 is likewise carried in the cover being' fastened to the flange at its sides and to the transverse extension 9 and plate 12 at its'ends, as shown in Fig. 2, the joint between said vertical plate and the flange extension and 'first mentioned plate being sulliciently tight to prevent any leaking between the various parts.
Cover 7 also carries a strainer 14 held in place upon the upper face of plate 12 by means of a hook or latch 15 connected to 'flange S and movable thereon.
To the under face of plate 12 is attached a double valve 16 passing through an opening in said plate and extending downwardly into the pail. The members 17 of' said valve are arranged at right angles to each other, as shown in Fig. 4, and are loosely movable in their bearings in said valve. The openings in said members are so arranged that the communication between the pail top and pail will be open when both members are in their vertical position. The lower ends of said members are weighted as at 18, whereby when the pail is tilted or moved `from its no1'- mal position with reference to its vertical axis, said valve members will have a corresponding movement independent of the pail and will automatically close the connection between the pail and its top. The opposite end of each valve member is provided with a washer' and thumb-piece 21 removably attached to said members to permit the same to be withdrawn for cleaning purposes, when the thumb-piece is disengaged.
The lower end of the pail top is further provided with a threaded extension 19 to enable said top to betightly fitted upon the upper edge of the pail, there being a horizontal connecting portion 22 between the flange S and extension 19, upon the upper face of which the plate 12 rests.
It will be obvious that when the pail with its top connected thereto is in any manner accidentally tilted or upset, the loose `lit o'l" the valve members within their bearing will permit the same to swing from their normal position and immediately cut o'fl communication between the pail top and pail and thus prevent the loss of the contents of the pail, it being understood that the spout cap is of course in place upon the spout during' the entire milking operation.
The pail is provided with the usual handle 23 Vhat is claimed, is,
1. A device of the kind described comprising in combination, a pail and a pail top, and

IIO
a double valve connected to the under side of said top7 the members ot said valve having weighted lower ends and being loosely movable in their bearings in said valve to automatically close communication between said top and pail when the pail is moved. from its normal position with reference to its vertical axis.
2. A milk pail having a top a strainer removably carried in said top and a double valve connected to the under side of said top, and affording a communication between said pail and top, the members of said valve being located at right angles to each other and provided with weighted lower ends, said members being loosely movable in their bearings in said valve to automatically close communication between said top and pail whenever the pail is moved from its normal position with reference to its vertical axis.
3. In a device of the kind described in combination, a pail and a pail top 5 a vertical Hange extending entirely around said top 5 a plate carried by said top and partiallT closing the same; a strainer carried by said top above said plate; a vertical plate connected to said flange and iirst mentioned plate; a spout carried on said lange adjacent said vertical plate and forming` an outlet Jfrom the pail; a cap for said spout and a double valve connected to the under side of said iirst mentioned plate and extending downwardly into said pail to aiiord a communication between said top and pail7 the members of said valve being located at right angles to each other and provided with weighted lower ends, said members being loosely7 movable in their bearings in said valve to automatically close communication between said top and pail whenever the pail is moved from its normal position with reference to its vertical axis.
ln testimonyv whereof, I all'ix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
