Description
' e dntd WILLIAM H. CLOUD,
OF FREMONT, OHIO.
Lettefr's Patent No. 85,644, dated Janna/ry 5, 1869.
mPROVEMENT IN COMBINED LATCH AND LOCK.
The Schedule raiened to in these Lettersl Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom fit may concern:
- Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. CLOUD, of Fremont, in the county of Sandusky, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and general arrangement of a lock, which can be used as a common latch, if desired, and which is simple, cheap, durable, and not so liable to get out of order as others more complicated, now in use.
YIn order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention apperta'rns, to make and use the same, I will now proceedto describe its construction and Operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l i s an inside view of the lock, when locked, and
Figure 2, the same, when unlocked.
A represents a lock-box, of suitable dimensions, at
^ ltheinner end of which the knob B passes through.
Inside of -the lock-box the knob is provided with a flange, C, of earn-shape, to which a rod, D,is pivoted.
This rod extends into a groove on the bolt.E, and is, at its forward end, provided with a notch, as seen in fig. l, into which notch a dog or pawl, F fits, said pawl being pivoted to the bolt E.
It'will be seen that turning the knob in either direction, the rod D, by means of the said dog or pawl, moves the bolt back, and as soon as the force is removed from the knob, the spring G, placed in rear of the bolt, presses the same forward again.
A spring, I, holds the pawl F down in its place.
A small key-shaft with knob passes through a slot in the front side ofthe lock-box, and through the bolt E, anda key, H, is secured to the same, in such a manner that when turned it will raise the pawl F out of the notch on the rod D, which, of course, eifectually locks it, as the knob B cannot operate on the bolt.
When the key H- is turned awayfrom the pawl, the spring I presses it down again in its place.
The knob operating the key H is so` arranged, that it can be-turned from the outside with a night-key.
By removing the pawl F and key H, and pivoting theA forward end of the rod D to the bolt, a cheap and simple latch is obtained.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
rlhe combination ofthe knob B, rod D, cam O, bolt E, and spring G, with the pawl F, spring/I, and key H, all constructed and arranged as described, and Operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 19th dayv of August, 1868.
WM. H, CLOUD. Witnesses:
HLRAM M. SHAW, E. LIUDENSLEGER.
