Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application filed June 16, 1906. Serial No. 322.064.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it knownthat I, THOMAS JEFFERSON SHORT, a citizen of the United States, residmg at Danville, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Cleaner for Car-Windows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the' art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and vice is rotated, the lever upon the opposite side of the with.
This invention comprises further objects and combinations of elements which will be hereinafter more fully described and shown in the accompanyin drawings, and the novel features thereof wil be particularly pointed out by the appended claims.
To obtain a full and correct understanding of the details of construction and combination of features and elements and advantages, reference is to be had to the hereinafter set forth description in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a car windoW showing the invention as applied thereto. i Fig. 2 is a sectional view on ine'2 ,2 of Fig. '1; Fig. 3 is a view showing a modified application of the invention. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device detached. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective View of the bushing. Making renewed reference to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference glass will travel in unison therecharacters indicate the corresponding parts in the several illustrations, by figures, 1 desi ates the glass of a car window to which t e improved device is connected by means of a bolt 2, said bolt passing through apertures 3 in the two arms 4each of which projects from the ends of the metallic lever 5 and also in the same plane therewith.
The parts of the bolt which engage the apertures 3 of the arms are square in cross section or flattened, as at 6, so as to cause the two levers to travel together for the urpose of cleaning both sides of the glass 0 the window. The part of the bolt which passes through the glassis also square but to obviate the friction of the corners of the square part upon the inner circumference of the aperture 7 in the glass, a suitable bushing 8 is provided, the outer circumference thereof,
being of cylindrical contour so as to allow the levers to havefree and easy movement thereof.
To cause the bushing, when the levers are operated, to rotate with the bolt, it is provided with a square outlined aperture 8.
To clamp the parts together, a nut 9 is threaded upon said bolt, but the clamping action is just sufficient to allow the levers to operate, without allowing them to bind against the glass.
The levers 5 are formed of any suitable metal and are provided with longitudinal grooves 10, the walls of which are inclined as shown in the drawings. These grooves receive elongated rubber wi ers 11 which are provided for the purpose 0 removing the steam, rain, snow and ice.
The lever upon the inner side of the glass is provided with a knob or hand piece-12 for the purpose of rotating the levers.
From the foregoing, the essential features and elements of the device, together with the simplicitythereo'f, will be plainly observed, and when manufactured'in accordance with the invention, an inexpensive market will be easily obtained therefor. 13
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful with the .protection of Letters Patent is:'
A window cleaning device, comprising a pair of levers, having wipers, arms each havmg a s uare outlined aperture, extending from sai levers, a bushin having asquare outlined aperture disposed between the arms, said bushing being provided with an outer cylindrical circumference to allow the levers In testimony whereof I have hereto affixed to have free and easy movements, said bushmy signature, in the 7 presence of two witing beingdisposed in a bearing of the Window, nesses.
a bolt and thumb nut for fastening the parts THOMAS JEFFERSON SHORT. together, said bolt having a partly square Witnesses:
I outlined shank to cause the levers and bush- ISAAC A. LOVE,
ing to rotate together. A. SMITH.
