FLEXIBLE BACK FOR PAPER PADS AND BGOKS.
. .l invention relates to u. flexible back for.
puper pads undbooks, and the object of my invention is to provide nieuns wherebypads of paper, or paper nrrunged in block form, nnd books are provided with flexible backs,
which, where the paper is in the form of u pud, provides it temporary binding and which readily permits the leaves of the pad to be separated at any particular point to remove one or more leaves without breaking thebuek of the pad.
To the above purposes, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction unrl m-rmigenient of parts, which, will be hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying druwingsQin which:
Figure 1 is u perspectiveview of a section ol" the backing, as prepared for use,- and ports thereof being broken away to more clearly illustrate the szune; Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section taken on the line LZ-2 ol Fig. i; Fig. I) is an end view of a pad or block ol paper, one edge ol' which is pro- -vi led with my improved buck, and which edge is shown in section; Fig. 4 is an elevution ol' :1 book, the leaves of which are connected with my iinproved buck.
ltel'erring by numerals to the tween-manying dmwings :--1 designates a. sheet of tough, llexible nmterinl, preferably puper, und-locarted on one side thereof is u coating 2, of glue. or analogous adhesive material, which is o1 such consistency its that it is elastic and flexible in order that it inny rciulily yield with any movement of the sheet 1. -E1n- .bedded in this coating of flexible, adhesive muteriul, and extending the entire length of the sheet are threads 3, which act as binders tor the body of said flexible adhesive nntteriul. Located on the top surface of the body ot nlil-tOl'lttl 2 is a thin coating oi glue, paste, or analogous inuterlitl 4, which is readily $pecificetion of Letters Patent. Application filed January 18,1907. Serial No. 352.935.

I soluble in Water, and which Will quickly dry 5 when applied to the edges ofsheets of paper. 55
My improved back is preferably made up I for use in large sheets tobe used by boo. binders, printers, and like persons engaged in the manufacture of books, and blocks or pads of paper, and when it is desired to block up :1 number of sheets of paper to form a block or paid, a. section of proper Width is cut .from the original sheet, which cut is made at right angles to the binder threads 3, and the surface or body of glue or paste 4 is now moistened or dip ed in Water, and the section immediate y thereafter applied to the edges of the pad of paper, or the leaves fornw ing the book. i
Proper pressure is applied to the back to set the same, and, after the glue or paste 4 has become dried, thc pad of paper'is ready for-use, or in the case of a book, theleaves thereof are ready for further binding.
The body of glue or paste 4 readily binds the sheets of paper together, and the body of flexible glue, or analogous material 2, and the sheet 1 form a very efficient and flexible binding.
I cluim:
1. As a. new article of manufacture, a binder for blocks of paper, comprising a sheet of flexible material, a coat of adhesive material on one side of the sheet, and binding, threads embedded in said adhesive material.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a flexible back for books or blocks of paper, comprising a .sheet of flexible materie 3.
- coating of flexible adhesive material on one side of the sheet, a coating of adhesive 1miteriul on the coating of the flexible adhesive historic], and binding threads embedded in the coating of flexible adhesive material.
A binder for blocks of paper, comprising a sheet ot' flexible matria a coat of elastic flexible adhesive-substance on one side of the sheet, and binding threads embedded in said costing,
In testimony whereof, I have signed. my
