Description

' UNITED sTArEs PATENT OFF-ICE.
JAMES HEN Y, or NEw YORK, N. Y.
BINDERS STAMP.
r Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1907.
A li ti fil d November 29, 1905. Serial No. 289,571.
I To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, JAMEs HENRY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of,
the borough of Brooklyn, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and ence of the heat required inthe use of bind-.
ers stamps.
The object of my inventionis to provide a binders stamp in which the shell is provided with a filling of heat-resisting material so that the shell will be prevented from spreading under the influence of heat and pressure,
' thereby obviating the fault above referred to and insuring the giving of a clear impression from the shell.
A further object is to provide a novel filling of heat-resistingmaterial composed of asbestos and glue, whichfilling may be packed into all the crevices and corners in the shell at the back of the die raised therefrom, while the filling is in a plastic form.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 0 represents a binders stamp in front elevation, Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, Fig. 3
is a transverse vertical section through the separated shell and'back, and Fig. 4 is a similar section showing the shell secured to the 3 5 back and provided with a filling of heat-resisting material.
The metal back of the binders stamp is denoted by 1. The metal shell which is secured thereto is denoted by 2 and may be provided with a die or dies 3 of any desired shape and character. This die is stamped from'the shell 2 and thereby leaves cavities 4 the back by meansofrivets 5'. V a
r A filling 6. of heat-resisting material is provided for the shell, which filling is packed into the cavities 4 in the shell formed by the die. This heat-resisting material 6 is composed of powdered asbestos and glue thoroughly mixed together and applied while in a plastic I state. I have foundthat this material is es-. pecially Well adapted as a filling for these shells for the reason that when in its plastic state, it can be readily packed into all of the smaller crevices as well as the large cavities of the die and when it becomes hard forms a solid support for the die and will prevent the shell from flattening out or becoming distorted under the heat and pressure required in printing from binders stamps.
What I claim as my invention is: v
1. A binders stamp comprising a back, a
shell secured thereto and a filling for the shell composed of powdered asbestos and glue, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A binders stamp comprising a metal back, a metal shell secured thereto and a filling for the shell composed of powdered asbestos and glue, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A binders stamp comprising a shell and a filling therefor composed of powdered asbestos and glue, as and for the purpose set forth. v
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two witnesses, this 24th day of November 1905.
JAMES HENRY.
in the back of the shell. In the present instance, I have, shown the shell as secured. to
