CHIMNEY-BACK.
Application filed April '7, 1906. erial No. 310,550.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs A. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crawfordsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney- Backs, of whichthe following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to improvements in integral, metallic chimney backs for roofs and to this end my invention consists in the peculiar form, combination and arrangement of the integral parts as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
A further objective sought and attained in my invention is the production of an integral, metallic chimney'back for roofs which effectually prevents rain and snow from entering between the chimney and the roof and which causes debris, dirt, snow etc, to gravitate away from it and away from the chimney. This attainment avoids the usual accumulation of debris, dirt, snow etc, over the chimney back and between the chimney and the roof which ordinarily hastens the corrosion and destruction of the metallic back.
My main objective is to produce an eflicient, durable and profitable article of manufacture of integral sheet metal of any suitable nature, for instance such as tin, zinc, copper etc, of more economy in cost and service tha has been done heretofore.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification wherein like letters and numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a top plan of my invention entire. Fig. 2 is an elevation of my invention entire taken from its chimney side. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line m, n, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top plan of a chimney and roof with my invention properly applied.
In the construction of my invention an integral sheet metal strip of any suitable material is bent into such form as fully attains my object. A represents a chimney of common form and use. B is a section of a roof. C re fers to the roof section of my invention, C to the chimney portion, and C C and C C to its double dividing slopes of the bridge part D D indicate points whereab out the chimney ortion C The double inclined slopes C C and C C form an angular bridge part between the in- Specification of Letters Patent.

clined roof section C and the vertical chimney portion C of my invention which divides and delivers the water fall beyond and away from the chimney corners and'prevents any leakage at the upper roof side of the chimney. The double inclined slopes O C and C C also gravitate debris, 'dirt, etc, from the upper roof side of the chimney where it most usually accumulates and discharges it beyond and away from the chimney corners. This peculiar provision of an integral, angular bridge part efiiciently braces and strengthens all the integral parts of my invention.
E E refer to delivery points which are below and beyond the upper corners of the chimney.
It will be observed that my invention is applied to the angle between the chimney A and the upper part of the roof B and that its roof section G is underneath the roofing of shingles, slate or metal, but which has been shown of shingles for an illustrative purpose only. In the above construction an integral metallic chimney back for roofs is produced without seams in the bends which makes a desirable article of manufacture with or without stampin machinery.
It will readily be seen that sizes corresponding with most chimneys in common use and with the usual inclines of roofs may be made as a commercial article. My invention may be hand made of several soldered pieces without departing from its spirit and sco e but its manufacture of an integral strip 0 sheet metal is more preferable.
I am aware of similar devices in which several parts have been united and applied about the chimney heretofore and I do not claim any of them but my metallic chimney back which has double inclined slopes and an angular bridge part made in the manner and for the urposes above set forth, is both new and use ul, and what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is,
1. An integral metallic chimney back for roofs, the same comprising an inclinedroof section, a vertical chimney portion, and an angular bridge part having a pair of double slopes inclined transversely from and later ally with the walls of the roof section and the chimney portion inwardly together for the purposes set forth, substantially as specified.
2. In an integral metallic chimney back for roofs, the combination with the chimney I and the roof of an integral metallic chimney structural rigidity and for gravitating rain, back having an inclined roof section, a verdebris, etc. as set forth, substantially as tical chimney portion, and an angular bridge specified. part comprising a pair of double slopes in- JAMES A.
