SlE-VE ATTACHMENT FOR EAVES-TROUGHS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,427, dated March 22, 1892.
Application filed July 11, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH GONZALEZ LAv- ALLET, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sieve Attachments forEaves-Troughs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing part of an eaves-trough or roof-drain equipped with my drain attachment. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view'of the same, the sieve being shown as open in dotted lines to clear it of accumulated leaves and debris; and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the under side of the drain.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to sieve attachments for eaves-troughs or gutters, designed to pre vent choking up of the same by leaves or other trash; and my improvement consists in the improved construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, theletterA designates an eaves-trough or gutter made of sheet metal and suspended along the base of the roof in the ordinary manner. This trough is slightly inclined longitudinally, as usual, and at its lower end is connected with the vertical pipe B, by which the water is carried to the ground. The outer edge of the trough, or that farthest from the house, is bent outwardly, forming a longitudinal roll 0, having an inside upwardl y-proj ectin g flange D, extending from end to end. This roll forms a hinge or bearing for the sieve or screen E, consisting of a plate of wire-netting or perforated sheet metal bent upon itself along one edge to form a roll F, adapted to engage and interlock with the hinge-roll C, and having its opposite edge provided with a longitudinally-bent plate G, se-

cured thereto and doubled upon itself where it overlaps the edge of the trough, so as to form a spring-catch H, which is adapted to engage with the straight inner edge (or that nearest the house) of the trough and by frictional contact therewith hold the sieve or screen securely in place when closed. From the above it will be seen that the sieve or screen effectually prevents any leaves or other trash accumulating upon the roof and which would be liable to wash down into and choke up the trough or gutter from gaining an entrance therein, while at the sametime it may be readily uncovered, when desired, in order to rinse or repair it.
The peculiar construction of the hinge C F is of importance, as it prevents the sieveplate from binding by rusting or becoming choked by dust. It will be seen that I use no hinge pins or pintles omhinge-fastenings of any kind, the hinge on which the cover turns being formed simply by the engaging rolls 0 and F, which are integral, respectively, with the trough-and the screen, neither are there any hinges connected with the locking device, which consists simply of the bent plate G, doubled upon itself along the edge, so as to form the overlapping catch H, adapted to engage or interlock with the trough by frictional contact.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination, with an eaves-trough having a roll along its outer edge provided with an upwardly-extending flange, of the sieve or screen having a roll engaging with said roll on the trough and a bent plate on its inner edge bent and doubled upon itself, so as to engage with the inner edge of the trough, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH GONZALEZ LAVALLET.
