UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DEVICE FOR FITTING GARMENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1907.
Application filed March 4:, 1907. Serial No. 360,614.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAUL WAGHS PosTEL, a citizen of the Empire of Austria, residing in New York, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Fitting Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved device for fitting garments which is to be used by tailors in place of pins, so that the mark ing of the garment in fitting can be accomplished in a quicker and more convenient manner, the same device being capable of being used for fitting mens coats and trousers and also for fitting skirts and ackets for ladies, and the like; and for this purpose the invention consists of a device for fitting garments, which comprises a pair of U-shaped clamps, each provided with a graduated faceplate having projecting buttons, set-screws for clamping each part to the garment, and
. hingedloops applied to the closed end of the clamp for connection with the clamp at the opposite side of the garment.
The invention consists further of certain details of construction and. combinations of parts which will be fully described herein- 'in the device in use u on a ladies acket Fig. 3 is a front-view of the device used as shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a similar section of the device when used as shown in Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, a, a are the clamps of each individual fitting device A which is intended to be used by tailors for the fitting of garments. For the fitting of coats three pairs of clamps are to be used, while for the fitting of trousers and skirts, etc., one pair is sufficient. Each clamp is composed of a U-shaped piece of metal which is placed over the edge of the garment to be fitted, the front-plate a of the U-shaped portion being provided with graduations in one inch and one-half inch and with headed studs b.
Applied to the inner surface of the frontplate a is a toothed spring-plate (1 having serrated bent-up ends and extending longitudinally between the front and rear plates of the clamp. The connection of this plate with the front-plate is preferably made by means of rivets, as shown. The toothed spring-plate is pressed at each end into the fabric of the garment by means of set-screws s which pass through threaded openings in the front-plate and which are preferably provided with hinged heads. The spring-plate d is supported by a plate d which also tensions said first-named plate. Both of said plates are applied to the clamp intermediately between its ends.
To the closed end of the U-shaped portion are hinged at the upper and lower corners of the same loops 6, which are preferably made of wire, and which are provided with forwardly-extending portions so as to readily engage the headed studs of the clamp attached to the opposite side of the garment to be fitted, as shown in Fig. 1.
When the garment is to be fitted the required number of clamps are applied to the front-edge of the same by turning the setscrews; then the connection of the loop of one clamp with the studs of the other clamp is made. The marking of the garment by the chalk is made by the tailor in the usual manner according to the line of the garment, the clamps holding the garment in position so as to permit the marking Without requiring the pinning together of the garment as is customary with tailors in fitting garments.
By my' improved device for connecting garments the fitting of garments is greatly facilitated and the device can be used over and over again for any garment, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A device for fitting garments, consisting of two clamps, each provided with means for being clamped to the garment, and with headed studs on the face-plate thereof and with hinged loops for connecting one clamp with the headed. studs of the other clamp.
2. A device for fitting garments, consisting l In testimony that I claim the foregoing as of tWo clamps, each formed of a U-shaped my invention, I have signed my name in 10 metal piece provideld on its face With gradiua presence of two subscribing Witnesses. tions and studs, a 0 am inglate serrate at T i a, the ends, means for sett ing sziid serrated ends SAUL ACHS I Ob} It so as to clamp the garment, and hinged loops Witnesses: at the closed end of the hook for engaging the PAUL GOEPEL, headed studs of the opposite clamp. HENRY J. SUHRBIER.
