SHEET METAL BOX. APPLICATION nun MAR.13,1906.
UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIo CHARLES T. WooTTEN AND AETEIIAST. EIoHAEDSoN, or PHILADELPHIA,
. PENNSYLVANIA; SAID WooTTEN ASSIGNOR To SAID IoHAEDsoN.
SHEET-METAL BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May '7, 1907.
10 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHARLES T. WOOT- TEN and ARTEMAS P. RICHARDSON, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Sheet- Metal Box, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention consists in constructing the lid of a sheet metal box so that its corners are closed and rendered air-tight.
It also consists of the lid provided with a recess which is adapted to receive the top edge of the body, thus forming a joint for the lid and body which is air-tight in its nature.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section of a portion on line 9cr Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section of a portion on line g *'y Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 represent steps in the operation of forming the body of the box. Figs. 6 and 7 represent Steps in the operation of forming the lid of the box.
Similar letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates the body and B designates the lid of a box embodying our invention. The body is formed of a bottom A and sides A the latter being turned up from the former and having their ends formed as in Fig. 4, with tongues C which are placed together as in Fig. 5 and then bent inwardly on each other and compressed forming the interlocked lapjoints or seams D at the corners of the box, one of which is shown in Fig. 2, said joints being on the interior of the box, where they are comparatively concealed and serving to hermetically close said corners and rendering the box air-tight thereat, while leaving the exterior of the sides of the body an unbroken right line from corner to corner and avoiding projections on said sides, especially adjacent the corners, although a portion of one of the tongues at each corner remains on the exterior of the side see Fig. 1, said portion however being flush with the portion of the adj a cent side, see Fig. 2.
The lid B is formed of a top B and sides B, the latter being turned down from the former, the blank comprising the same as shown in Fig. 6 having its corners cut away forming the fillet E and the edges or walls F extending outwardly therefrom, see Fig. 6, said walls being brought together and the fillet accordingly formed into laterally-extending folds G which are compressed and overlap the adjacent portions of the sides B thus locking the corners of the lid and hermetically closing the upper portions of said corners forming the same air-tight, it being also seen that the exterior surfaces of the Sides of the lid are flat and unbroken right lined from corner to corner and smooth throughout.
The top of the lid is formed with upturned recesses H which extend around the same ad jacent to the sides, so that when the lid is I placed on the body, the top edges of the latter enter said recesses and are embraced by the walls thereof, thus producing closed and air-tight joints between the lid and body.
In practice, the top of the lid is depressed excepting near its outer margin, where portions of the metal remain elevated, See Fig. 3. Each of these portions forms one side wall of each recess H, the other wall of which is formed by the adjacent side B of the lid as most plainly shown in said Fig. 3.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a sheet metal box, a lid formed of a top and depending sides, the latter being separated at the corners of the lid and oppositely projecting folds of double thickness of metal extending from fillets integral with the bases of said walls and overlapping the upper portions of the exterior of said separated walls and resting against the adjacent portions of said sides.
2. In a sheet metal box, a lid comprising a top, depending sides and a fillet at the corner, said fillet forming oppositely disposed folds extended for a portion only of the depth of the sides, widest at their lower ends and compressed about the sides at the upper portions thereof.
3. In a sheet metal box, a lid comprising a top and sides with the corner joints open at their lower ends and at their upper ends hermetically closed by fillets integral with and embracing the sides at the corners.
4. In a Sheet metal box, a lid composed of top and sides and having an upwardly extending recess in said top, one wall of which is composed of the metal of the top and the other Wall is composed of the adjacent side,
' said Walls being parallel and in close contact 5. Ablankfora box lid, the same havingits 1o corners cut away to form fillets and Walls extended outwardly therefrom and beyond said fillets.
