LACING. DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ratented May '7, 1907.
Application filed September 30,1905' Seal NO- 230793- To all wlw/'lt it mm1/,y concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD J. EvANs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Van j Wert, in the county of Van Wert and State of i Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvel ments in Lacing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lacing devices designed especially for use on leggings, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character with which the lacing element or cord may be properly and securely engaged, and one wherein liability of the exposed portions of the cord becoming engaged with briers or the like is obviated.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a legging equipped with a lacing device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, longitudinally through one of the lacing devices. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the lacing members.
Referring to the drawings, l designates a 2 and a lacing cord or element 3 threaded through lacing members or devices 4 applied to one flap of the legging and engaged with with the exception of the lacing devices 4, being of the usual construction and material and adapted in practice to perform their ordinary functions.
The lacing members 4, which are identical in construction, are each formed from a single piece or blank of material stamped and bent in shape and comprising enlarged end portions 6 perforated to form lace-receiving openings or eyes 7 and an intermediate elon` gated tubular lace-receiving portion 8 disposed centrally between the eyes 7, in the formation of which latter the metal struck j from the blank is formed into tubular fastening members or rivets 9 by means of which the lacing member is, in practice, secured to the legging l.
In practice, the lacing devices 4 are attached at appropriately spaced intervals to the legging l and adjacent one edge or iap of the latter, adjacent to the other edge or flap of which the hooks 5 are attached, said hooks being disposed at suitable intervals to alternate with the lacing devices 4. In the operation of lacing the legging the cord or element 3 is threaded through the openings or eyes 7 and at the outer face of the legging longitudinally through the tubular portion 8, said cord being engaged at the point 'between the lacing devices 4 with the hooks 5 in the usual manner. It is to be particularly noted that owing to the provision of the tubular portions 8 on the lacing devices the lace is protected at points between the eyes 7 and is prevented from becoming engaged withbriers or the like when the wearer of the legging is traveling through underbrush.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In combination with a legging having overlapping flaps, lace-engaging hooks attached to one of said flaps, a lacing cord attached to the legging and adapted for engagment with said hooks, and lacing 'devices attached to the other of said flaps, said devices each comprising an elongated body provided adjacent its ends with eyes through which the lace is to be threaded and with an intermediate elongated tubular lace receiving portion formed to permit the lace to slide freely therethrough, said tubular portion being designed to protect that part of the lace extended between the eyes.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. RICHARD J. EVANS.
