To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY IIIATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mixers and Feeders for Boiler Compounds', and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.
This invention relates to apparatus for thoroughly mixing compounds for use in steam boilers, to improve the quality of bad water which in many cases must be used in making steam, the invention relating also to apparatus for feeding the compound into the feed-water for the boilers in proper quantities, or in such proportions as may be desired.
In the use of boiler compounds, for softening or otherwise changing the character of the feed-water, or for scaling or preventing the formation of scale in steam boilers, much difliculty has been experienced on account of constituents of liquid compounds separating and settling to the bottoms of the vessels from which the compounds were fed as liquids to the boilers, with the result that the strength or quality of the compounds varied to such extent that satisfactory results were not obtained in the matter of uniformity of quality of feed-water.
Objects of this invention are to provide apparatus whereby the compound may be kept thoroughly mixed in solution of uniform quality while being supplied to the feedwater, and to provide apparatus whereby the com ound may be automatically supplied aii fed into the feed-water in required proportions, varying with the variations in the flow of the feed-water, a further object being to provide simple, relatively inexpensive and durable apparatus of the abovementioned character.
I/Vith the above-mentioned and minor objects in view the invention consists in a mixer and feeder for boiler compound coniprising a tank provided with a mixer, and a novel pump for feeding the compound and operating the mixer; and, the invention consists further in the novel parts and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter particularly described and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, a designates a steam boiler for illustrating the purposes of the invention; b, the boiler-front; c, the grates in the boiler-furnace; d, the smoke-box; and e, the steam-dome of the boiler. Water may be fed to the boiler by any suitable boiler feeder, in the present case a feed pump being shown, f designating the water-cylinder 5 g, the steam-cylinder; and h, the steamchest or valve-chest for the steam-cylinder; i, the suction pipe of the pump through which the feed-water is to be supplied to the pum j, the discharge pi e through which the eed-water is to pass om the pump to the boiler; and c, the steam-pipe provided with a throttle-valve Z for passage of steam from the boiler to the boiler-feeder.
The tank m has a lid n having a iilling opening n and may be constructed of either metal or wood, the cover being secured by means of ears o to the upper part of the body of the tank and having a central aperture p therein. The lid should not tightly close the top of the tank. A guide bar g is secured to the bottom m of the tank and extends toward the opening p opposite thereto. The tank has a sight gage 19.
A steam cylinder r having a steam-chest or valve-chest r is provided and suitably supported above the tank and may comprise such as are used in steam-pumps of wellknown construction. A steam-pipe 5 is connected to the steam-chest r and also to the steam-pipe k between the valve Z and the boiler-feeder, so that when the valve lis open steam-may be supplied to both the boilerfeeder and the compound-feeder and regulated thereby, the pipe 5 being provided with a throttle valve 6 for independent regulation of the steam supply for the compound-feeder, and for cutting oil the steam supply when necessary. The steam cylinder valve-chest r has an exhaust opening 7 as usual.

and has a hollow part s that extends over and about the guide bar g to be guided thereby as part of the mixing apparatus. Two mixer plates t and t are suitably secured to the hollow part s and extend horizontally in the tank m at suitable distances above the bottom thereof, the plates having apertures 8 therein. In some cases one plate only may be provi/ded, and if desired additional plates may be provided in relatively deep tanks. The plates are designed to stir the liquid compound in the tank for preventing the settling to the bottom of the tank.
A pump arm d is suitably secured to the piston rod s above the tank and extends laterally beyond the tank. The lower part of the tank m has an outlet connection 9 to which is connected a pump o havinga suitable intake valve 10 and an outlet valve 1 1 as usual. The pump is provided with a stopvalve 12 connected with a discharge-pipe 13 that connects the pump with the supply pipe i of the boiler-feeder, so that the compound may be fed into the feed-water and pass with it through the boiler-feeder, which is of advantage in some cases, but if desired the compound may be otherwise conducted to the boiler a. The pump plunger w extends through the pump-arm u and is provided with a collar and two nuts y and y to be engaged by the arm when in operation, the nuts being adjustable on the plunger so as to vary the stroke of the plunger with respect to the stroke ofthe arm. v
Preferably the cylinder 1 is provided with a frame 14 that is mounted on the lid n, but the and a guide-bar 15 attached to the frame guides the arm u. The pump o has a frame z that is attached to the tank m. A guide 16 is attached to the upper portion of the tank and guides the plunger w. A lid 17 covers the opening n but may be dispensed with if desired. The lower part of the tank is provided with a drain-cock 18.
In practical usel the boiler compound in liquid form is to be put into the tank m, or the tank may be 'filled with water to which suitable chemicals may be added to produce a boiler compound. After the boiler-feeder begins operations the valves 6 and 12 may be opened to permit the compound-feeder to operate. The reciprocatory movements of the piston-rod s of the steam engine cylinderr will operate the mixer to maintain uniformity l of'stre'ng'th of compound, and the arm u will operate the pump plunger fv, alternately engaging the collar :r and the nut y. If the pump feeds too much compound, the stroke of the plunger o 'may be lessened by moving the nuts y and y farther away from the collar x. Also the valve 6 may be used for governing the speed of the piston-rod s. After making the adjustments to suit a given speed of the boiler-feeder, then the valve Z may be used alone to regulate the feed-water supply and the supply of boiler compound to the feedwater, so that the feeding of the boiler compound requires but little or no attention during operations. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. A mixer and feeder for boiler compounds including a tank, a steam Y engine cylinder mounted on the tank and having a piston-rod extending into the tank and serving as part of a mixer, the piston-rod having stirring devices attached thereto, and a pump connected with the tank and operated by the pistonrod.
2. A mixer and feeder for boiler compounds including a tank having a guide-bar fixed therein, a steam engine cylinder mounted on the tank and having a piston-rod guided by the guide-bar, a mixing device attached to the piston-rod, a pump connected with the tank and having a plunger, and a pump-arm secured to the piston-rod and having operative connection with the plunger.
3. The combination of a boiler, a boilerfeeder, a water-supply pipe connected with the boiler-feeder, a discharge-pipe between the boiler-feeder and the boiler, a steam-pipe between the boiler and the boiler-feeder, a tank having mixing devices therein, a pump connected with the tank and also with the water-supply pipe, a steam engine cylinder having a piston-rod connected to the mixing devices, an arm secured to the piston-rod and operatively connected with the pump, a steam-chest attached to the steam-cylinder, and a steam-pipe connected with the steamchest and also with the steam-pipe that is between the boiler and the boiler-feeder.
