Other objects, such as simplicity and cheapness of construction, 'efficiency in operation, and the ease with which various parts may be repaired or replaced, will be obvious from the description hereinafter set forth.` Y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the valves. Fig. 3 is lan enlarged side view of part of the signal mechanism. Fig. 4 is a plan view of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is an end view of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Fig. 1, 10, 11, and 12 represent the upper, middle, and lower sections, respectively, of the outer casing of my device. These sections are preferably of cast iron or steel of cylindrical shape and are Fprovided with flanged joints, as shown in ig. 1, whereby the casing is absolutely steam and water proof. This form of construction also better permits the taking apart of the device for repairs or the replacing of worn parts.
The upper section contains the water inlet and outlet and the valve for controlling the supply of water passing therethrough to the boiler. The middle section is provided with a similar valve mechanism for controlling the inlet of the steam from the boiler and the outlet to the water-pump, while the lower section constitutes a float-chamber having passages communicating with the water in the boiler and is provided with a float adapted to move with the variations in the water-level and control the operation of the water and steam valve by means of a suitable connecting-rod, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the upper section 10 is a chamber 15, having an outlet-passage 16 communicating with the boiler water-sup ly. Within this chamber 15 is a globular c amber 14, which communicates, through a passage13,with the water-inlet. `The chamber 14 communicates with the chamber 15 at top and bottom and has suitable valve-seats for the valves 18 18 on the rod 17. The valves operate simultaneously and may be of any suitable construction. but preferably are constructed as shown in Fig. 2, the two valves 18 18 being connected by a stem 40, through which the rod 17 passes, the rod being secured in the end of the upper valve.. Each valve is provided with guide-lugs which fit within the valveseats. The valve-rod 17 passes through a stufling-b 0X 19 in the lower part of the outer chamber 15.
The middle section 1 1 has a globular chamber 21, provided with a steam-inlet 20, leading from the boiler, and within this chamber 21 is another chamber 22, having a passage 25 leading to the pump for supplying water to the boiler through the upper section. The chamber 22 is open at top and bottom and communicates with the chamber 21'. Valveseats are provided 1n these openings, and valves23 and 24 are mounted on the rod 17, so as to close against the valve-seats. These valves 23 and 24 are made similar to the valves 18 18 ot the upper section. It will be noticed that the steam-passages are opposite in direction to the water-passages and are so connected to the boiler as to give a boilerpressure on all the valves, thereby doing away with the usual packing-glands and unnecessary friction. 'Ihe lower part of this section is preferably cast with an outwardlyflaring skirt, forming the upper part of the float-Chamb er or lower section 26. The float 27 within the chamber is preferably of circular horizontal section and elliptical vertical section, whereby it will move easily up andy down with slight variations in the waterlevel and operate the steam and water valves through the adjustable rod 17, with which it is connected and which passes through a suitable guide 28 in the upper part of the floatchamber. In the lower part of this chamber is a similar guide 29, through which passes a IOO guide-rod 30 on the lower part of the oat to prevent lateral movement.
A suitable catch-basin 31 is provided below the oat-chamber, having an outlet 32 for the purpose of removing sediment and the like collecting in this chamber, as well as withdrawing the water from the chamber when repairing the apparatus. On one side of this chamber are openings 33 and 34, communicating with the boiler, one above the normal water-level and the other below. The device is so situated that the normal water-level in the float-chamber will correspond to the normal water-level in the boiler. The float may be adjusted, for instance, by admitting shot to the interior through an opening 35 at the top beforel the rod 17 is connected, so that when water is at normal level the steam and water valves will be closed. On the opposite side of this chamber are openings 36 and 37, to which is secured the usual water-glass or gage-cocks 41.
)n the rod 17, above the float-chamber 27, is provided a collar 3S, adapted to be engaged by a rod 39 for the purpose of blowing one ol two whistles 40 as the float moves up or down from the normal level. One of these whistles is preferably of a high tone to warn the attendant that the water in the boiler is above normal and the other is of a low tone for the purpose of denoting low water in the boiler. At the end ofthe rod 39 is a bent rod 41, engaging two bent levers 42 and 43, having weights 44 and 45 for restoring the whistle-valves to normal position after either valve has been opened.
I claim as my invention- 1. A device of the character described, comprising a casing having a plurality of sections, an internal wall forming an inclosed chamber in the upper section through which passes the water from the pump to the boiler, an internal wall forming an inclosed chamber in another section through which passes the steam from the boiler to the pump, valves in both of said inclosed chambers, a float-chamber communicating with the boiler and independent of said iirst chamber, a iloat therein, and means connecting the iloat with the valves for operating the same.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a casing having a plurality of sections, an internal wall forming an inclosed ,chamber in one of said sections through which passes the water from the pump to the boiler, an internal wall forming an inclosed chamber in another section through which passes the steam 'from the boiler to the pump, valves in both of said inclosed chambers, a Afloat-Chamb er communicating with the boiler and independent of said other chambers, a
iioat therein, and. means connecting the Iloat with the valves for operating the same, and a catch-basin below said float-chamber having an outlet at the bottom thereof.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a casing having a plurality of sections, an internal wall forming an inclosed chamber in one of' said sections through which passes the water from the pump to the boiler, an internal wall forming an inclosed chamber in another section through which passes the steam from the boiler to the pump, valves in both of said inclosed chambers, a float-chamber communicating with the boiler and independent of the other chambers, a loat therein, and means connecting the vfloat with the valves for operating the same, said float-chamber having guides in its upper and lower parts for holding the lloat in place.
4. A device ol the character described, comprising a casing having a plurality of superimposed sections, an internal wall iorming an inclosed chamber in the upper of said sections through which passes the water fr om the pump to the boiler, an internal wall forming an inclosed chamber in another section through which passesthe steam from the boiler to the pump, the steam and water passing through the respective chambers in opposite directions, valves in both or' said inclosed chambers, a 'I'loatchamber communieating with the boiler and independent of said other chambers, a iloat therein, and. means connecting the iloat with the valves for simultaneously operating the same, in combination with a signal means operated from said connecting means for warning the attendant ol high or low water in the boiler.
