GUSTAV ADT, OF FORBACH, GERMANY.
CENTFHFUGAL MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May '7, 1 907'.
Application filed April 27, 1906. Serial No. 314,083.
. tion.
In centrifugal machines used in various branches of industry, the material to be treated is introduced into a drum mounted on a vertical spindle and provided with an insertion or centrifugal vessel having perforated walls, from which the material to be treated passes into the space between said vessel and the walls of the drum and is discharged from the same. As in many of these apparatus the only problem to be solved is to separate the material introduced from liquid ingredients, it being immaterial what shape the materials remaining in the perforated centrifugal vessel assumes and at what part of said vessel the liquid constituents pass out, therewas not any reason for using any but a vertical arrangement of the spindle. It may, however, be desired to dry the material which remains in the perforated centrifugal vessel as quickly as possible, in which case it is preferable that the material be distributed evenly over as great an area as possible, particularly on the bottom of said vessel as well as on the sides, and also that a portion of the substance to be separated off shall be able to pass through the bottom of the centrifugal vessel while the latter is rotated. In order to effect this it is necessary to depart from the hitherto generally customary arrangement of a vertical spindle and moreover to compel the substances which are to be separated off not only to pass out through the sides of the centrifugal vessel but alsov through its bottom. In order to bring this about in a reliable manner, and also in case of need in order to dry quickly the residue contained in the said vessel, a suction device is combined with centrifugal machines according to the present invention, which carries off through a hollow shaft the substances to be removed from the centrifugal vessel.
In the accompanying drawing a diagrammatic illustration of an apparatus according to this invention is given by way of example.
vOn a iiXed frame l are secured by means of bolts two standards 2. In the standards 2 is mounted the lower frame 4 provided with a segment 3, which frame can be set in any desired oblique position on said standards and held firmly in such position by means of screws 5. The driving pulley 7 is mounted on the driving shaft 6, but said shaftmay be driven directly by an electric motor or. by any other suitable means. In the frame 4 is mounted the hollow spindle 8 connected in any desired manner to the' suction pipe 9. The hollow spindle 8 terminates in the centrifugal drum 10 provided with a centrifugal vessel 1l of which both the walls and bottom 12 are provided with perforations. The centrifugal drum l0 is closed above by means of a cover 13 in any suitable manner, said cover being provided with a hopper 14 through which the material to be treated is introduced. y
If it is desired that the material remaining behind in theperforated centrifugal vessel shall assume a certain shape, thus, that it shall become deposited not only against the sides of `said vessel but also on its bottom, then the machine is set obliquely and the driving mechanism and the suction device are started, so that said device removes through the hollow shaft the substances centrifugally ejected from said vessel and causes the residue deposited on `the walls and bottom of said vessel to dry quickly.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A centrifugal machine comprisin in combination a frame, a revoluble ho low shaft, adjustable means for supporting said shaft on said frame at an 'igle inclined to the horizontal, means for r ring said shaft, and a centrifugal hollow dri/.l-ffmounted on and coaXially with said shaft and provided with an inner centrifugal vessel having perforated sides and walls, the interior space of said drum communicating with the interior space of said hollow shaft.
2. A centrifugal machine comprisin in combination a frame, a revoluble ho low shaft, adjustable means for supporting said shaft on said frame at an angle inclined to the horizontal, means for rotating said-shaft, a centrifugal hollow drum mounted on and coaXially with said shaft and provided with an inner centrifugal vessel having perforated sides and walls, the interior space of said drum communicating with the interior space of said hollow shaft, a suction device having a suction pipe, and means connecting said suction pipe with said hollow shaft.
3. A centrifugal machine comprising in ICO IIO
combination a frame, a revoluble hollow shaft7 adjustable means for supporting said shaft on said frame at an angle inclined to the horizontal, said adjustable means oomprising an adjustable member revolubly supporting said shaft and adjustably mounted upon said frame and means adapted to Clamp lsaid adjustable member to the frame, means adapted for rotating said shaft, and a centrifugal hollow drum mounted on and coaXially with said shaft and provided with an inner centrifugal vessel having perforated sides and walls, the interior space of said drum communicating with the interior space of said hollow shaft.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
