CLAMP FOR STRETOHERS FOR STRETGHING FENCES.
- AFFLIOATIOK XILBD FEB. 27. 1907 ALLAN G. LEFLER, OF BELLEVILLE, MICHIGAN.
CLAMP FOR STRETCHERS FOR STRETCHING FENCES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 190 7.
Application filed February 27, 1907. Serial No. 359,559.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known. that I, ALLAN G. LEFLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belleville, Ii. F. I). No. 5, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (lamps for Stretchers for Stretching Fences, &c., of which the following is a specnication.
This invention relates particularly to clamps for stretchers adapted for use for stretching fence or other wires or stretching sheet metal or other material.
The object of the invention is to provide a clamp which will quickly engage and firmly hold the material to be stretched, and which can be readily operated to release the same when desired, advantage being taken of the large power of a cam to effect the clamping action.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the clamp. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof. Fig. 3 IS a plan in detailof one of the clamping bolts.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicate a pair of angle bars between which the wires 7 are clamped. These angle bars are provided with suitable holes or devices whereby the chains or other tackle may be attached. Also the respective bars have registering holes 8 and slots 9, which register when the bars are properly placed to ether. The holes 8 receive the clamping bo ts 10, each of which is threaded at the end to re ceive the adjusting nut 11 and is provided at the other end with a head 12 having on opposite sides thereof lugs 13. The other bar 6 has the slots 9 so that said bar may be placed or removed as necessary.
The cam lever is indicated at 1i having a head 15 which is forked or recessed, each fork or check having a slot 16 of proper size and shape to receive the lug 13 so that the forks may be hooked thereunder. IVashers 17 are conveniently placed under the nut 11 and under the cam head 15.
In use, the wires 7 are first laid across the one bar 6 and then the other bar, the one having the slots 3, is put in place. The cam lever is then swung down or parallel to the angle bars, thereby bearing against the angle irons and clamping the wires therebetween. If the bars are say four or five feet long three or four of these cam clamps can be used at various points along the bars. In addition to gripping wire the device can very readily be used for gripping the edges of sheet metal or other material, which may be desired to be stretched. The nuts 11 allow the length of the bolts to be adjusted to accommodate wires of different sizes.
I claim:
1.. A fence clamp comprising two angle bars, a bolt connecting said bars, said bolt having a head and lugs projecting from the sides of the head thereof, and a cam having forks engageable under the lugs, to tighten the bolts.
2. A clamp comprising two angle bars, one of the bars having a hole and the other having a slot registering therewith, a bolt eX tending through the hol and the slot, and having a head, and means to tighten said bolt comprising a cam engageable under the head thereof.
3. A clamp comprising a pair of angle bars, a bolt connecting the same, said bolt having a nut on one end and a head on the other head having laterally-extending lugs on 0pposite sides,.and a cam having a recessed head with opposite cheeks slotted to engage the said lugs.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
