Application fi ed December 13,1906. Serial No. 347,679.
To wZZ whom, it vita/y concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD R. SARGENT, of the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description when taken in' connection with the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to handles for caskets, boxes and similar articles, and has for its object the production of a novel, simple and efficient handle, having the various improvements and combinations set forth and claimed hereinafter.
The invention is an improvement on the class of handles described in a former application of mine, No. 123,885, filed September 18, 1902. In the form of handle therein set forth the arm of the handle proper is pivotally connected with a sheet metal socket plate, the edges of which are turned down to form a hollow interior for the ends of the arm. lVhen the handle is in use, and the arm is in its raised position, the end of the arm abuts against the outside of the socket plate to limit the upward movement of the arm. If the handle is subjected to a severe strain, the sheet metal surface of the socket plate is liable to give way under the pressure of the end of the arm, and the parts of the handle thus become disarranged.
The present invention provides a resistance block or separate piece of metal from the socket plates which fits between the inner surface of the socket plate and the boX, or other article, to which the handle is applied, so that the pressure of the end of the arm on the outside of the socket plate is transmitted directly by means of the inserted resistance block against the boX, or other article. The inserted piece or resistance block may be held in place by means of the pivot pin of the handle arm.
The invention consists in this and other improvements and combinations of parts set forth and claimed hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a handle embodying the invention, Fig. 2, an end view of the same, Fig. 3, a reverse view of same, Fig. 4, a rear view of the socket plate alone, Figs. 5 and 6, vertical sections through lines 55 of Fig. 3, the handle arm being shown in different positions, and Fig. 7, a detail view in elevation of the resistance piece or block.
In all figures, similar letters of reference represent like parts'.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description, the parts designated by the letter A represent the handle proper, which is formed of sheet metal with its central portions (1 rolled to provide a convenient grip. The ends of the arm portions C of the handle proper are forked to form two parallel attaching plates B.
D designates the socket plate formed of a flat blank of sheet metal stamped up into shape, with its outer edges turned inward to form with the face of the plate a hollow interior for the reception of the attaching plates B of the handles and the pivot pins H. In the surface of'the plate near each end are two parallel perforations or slots E, on either side of which the plate is stamped outward to form depressions or curved portions F for the reception of the pivot pins H.
So far the construction is similar to that shown and described in my application above referred to. i
The portions of the plate D between each pair of slots E are curved outwardly to form straps or bridges G, which close the openings in the interior of the socket plate between the attaching plates B, and act as a support for the portion of the socket plate immediately above, which limits the upward movement of the handle as the ends 0 of the arms C abut against it when the handle is swung upward. From each strap or bridge a small lug J is bent inward to engage the pivot pin H when in its proper position to prevent its lateral displacement.
K designates a resistance block or piece, which is provided with a transverse perforation L for the pivot pin H. The resistance block K is of such thickness as to extend from the inner side of the surface of the plate D to the outer surface of the boX, or other article X, to which the handle is secured, as more particularly shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
The parts are assembled, as follows. The attaching plates B are projected through the slots E, and the resistance piecesK placedbetween them. The pivot pin H is then forced longitudinally through the pivot holes of the plates B and block K. The handle is then secured to the box, by means of screws, through screw holes M.
When the handle proper A is raised, the end 0 of the arm C bears against the outer surface of the socket plate D, and the inner surface of the socket plate abuts against the resistance piece K, which in turn presses against the box, or article X, to which the handle is secured. By this means, the box or article X receives the pressure of the end of the arm and the socket plate is relieved at this point.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is
1. In a handle, the combination with the arm of the handle having an attaching plate;
7 of a socket plate formed of sheet metal with its edges turned in to form a hollow interior,
said attaching plates, said socket plate having a depression on the inner side thereof between said openings for the lateral insertion of the pivot pin of said attaching plates; a bridge of metal extending from the upper to the lower side of said depression; and a portion bent up from the bridge adapted to en gage the pivot pin when in said depressionfito 4o prevent its lateral displacement, substantially as and for the purposes dGSOIIbGddQlp l-Q In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand on the 12th day of December, 1906.
