Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1907.
Original application filed September 18, 1902, Serial No. 123,885. Divided and this application filed November 26, 1906.
Serial No. 345,158.
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD It. SARGENT, of the city and county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
The present application is a division of an application filed by me on September 18, 1902, Serial Number 123,885, for handles.
This invention relates to handles for cas kets, boxes and similar articles, and has for its object the production of a novel, simple and efficient handle having the various improvements and combinations set forth and claimed hereinafter.
One of the features so described and claimed is the production of an engaging portion of the socket plate to hold the pivot pin in its position when assembled.
In thedrawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a handle embodying my invention, Fig. 2, an end view of the same, with the handle raised, Fig. 3, a reverse view of the same, with the handle lowered, Fig. 4, a corresponding view of the socket plate alone, and Fig. 5, avertical section on lines 5'5 of Fig. 3.
In all figures, similar letters of reference represent like parts.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description thereof, the parts designated by the letter A represent thehandle proper, which is formed of sheet metal, the central portion a being rolled to provide a convenient grip, and the extremities of the arm portions C being forked to form two par allel attaching plates B, with pivot holes I).
D designates the socket plate formed of a flat blank of sheet metal stamped up into shape. The outer edges d are turned inward to form with the face of the plate a hollow interior for the reception of the attaching plates B of the handle, as shown more particularly in Fig. 5. In the surface of the plate near each end are two parallel perforations or slots E, and on either side of the slots E the plate is stamped outward to form depressions or curved portions F for the reception of the pivot pins H, as shown more particularly in Figs. 2, 3 and 5.
The portions of the plate D between each pair of slots E are divided transversely, and as more particularly shown in Fig. 5, the upper portions G are curved outwardly, and the lower portions J inwardly.
The several parts are assembled by inserting the attaching plates B into the slots E, and forcing the pivot pins II through the pivot holes I). The portions of the plate J engage the pins II to prevent their being drawn laterally out of the depressions F, while the ends of the depressions themselves (Fig. 3) tend to prevent the longitudinal displacement of the pins. The portions G of the plate close the openings between the slots E. The socket plate D is secured to the box, casket, or other article, by screws, passing through the screw holes d, and when so secured the outer edges of the socket plate bear against the box or other article, as shown more particularly in Fig. 5.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a handle, the combination with the arm of the handle, having an attaching plate; of a socket plate formed of sheet metal, with an opening for said attaching plate, said socket plate having a depression on the inner side thereof extending on both sides of said opening, for the lateral insertion of the pivot pin of said attaching plate, and having a portion bent inwardly toengage said pivot pin when in said depression to prevent its lateral displacement, substantially as described.
2. In a handle, the combination with the arm of the handle; having a plurality of parallel disposed attaching plates; of a socket plate formed of sheet metal having openings for said attaching plates, said socket plate having depressions on the inner side thereof extending on both sides of said openings, for the lateral insertion of the pivot pin of said attaching plates, and a portion bent in- In witness whereof, I have hereunto set wardly to engage the pivot pin when in said my hand on the 23rd day of November, 1906.
depression to prevent its lateral displacement, and a further portion bent downwardly between said openings for said attaeh- EDWARD SARGENT' 5 ing plates to form a cover for the space be- Witnesses:
tween the attaching plates of said arm, sub- SAMUEL H. FISHER,
stantially as described. ERROLL M. AUGUR.
