KARL WEISS, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT REVOLVING PLIERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May '7, 1907.
Application filed October 3, 1906.1 Serial No. 337,265.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL Wniss, a citizen of the United States, residingl at Waterbury, in the county of New I-Iaven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Revolving Pliers, of which the followingis a specification. i
This invention relates to pliers especially adapted for wire workers and the object of the invention is a set of pliers, the jaws of which can be rotated independent of a rotary movement of the handles, so that in twisting wires it is not necessary to release the grip each half turn in order to take a new grip and continue the twisting step by step. The pliers are also useful in working in corners or other places whereit will be diflicult to manipulate the ordinary pliers as the jaws can be operated by the handle levers in any position.
The invention consists of a pair of movable gripping jaws provided with cutters and turning upon a common pivot pin, of a movable cam block adapted to be forced in a straight line between the inner ends of the jaws which are divergent and provided with rollers and a pair of handle levers rotatable with respect to the jaws and cam block, to-
gether with suitable means for inclosing the cam block and holding the parts in their assembled position.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pliers, the jaws being shown open; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the pliers; Fig. 3 is a section on the line of Fig. 2, the aws being shown in open position Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a section onthe line -oc of Fig. 2, the jaws being shown in closed position 5 Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3; Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 3 Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of one of the jaws; Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the cam block; Fig. l0 is a perspective view of a sleeve rotating upon the cam block when in position; Fig. 11 is a detail perspective View of the inner end of one of the handle levers Fig. 12 is a detail perspective view of one section of a casing; Fig. 13 is a perspective view of a flanged collar.
The pliers comprise the following essential parts namely a pair of co-operating jaws A, a cylindrical casing B split diametrically and serving as a holder for the jaws and also as a casing or housing for a movable cam block C.
A sleeve D is rotatably held upon the cam block C and within the casing B and is adapted for rotation relative to rotation of the casing, jaws or cam block. Operating lever handles E adapted to engage and operate the cam block are held in their proper position by means of a lnurled and fianged collar F. The above are the essential features of the device and their construction will be described in detail.
Each jaw A is provided with a bifurcated portion A adjacent its rear end in which portion is arranged a pin A2 and .this pin pro- J, which forms a common pivot pin for both of the jaws. The bolt J is held in position by an ordinary nut J. To further aid in holding the jaws in position and also to hold them normally open, springs II are connected at one end to the pivot pin A2 of one of the jaws and at the opposite end to the pivot pin A2 of the other jaw. The casing B is split diametrically in order to facilitate the assembling of the parts mentioned and each section is provided with a circumferential interior shoulder B2 which terminates short of the edges of the sectionl so that when the two sections are placed together they form a cylinder provided with opposing shoulders on opposite sides of the cylinder, the ends of which are spaced apart. The cam block C consists of a disk C of less diameter than the casing B and which carries upon its front face the cam block proper. This cam block has its forward end V-shaped, thereby forming two oppositely inclined cam faces C2, which faces are adapted to engage respectively the cam faces A3 of the jaws A. The cam block C also carries two outwardly and oppositely arranged shoulders C3, which fit in the spaces between the ends of the shoulders B2, thereby preventing rotation of the cam block Within the casing B and independent of rotation of the casing. The cam block C I preferably core out, as shown in the drawing, in order to reduce as much as pos- IOO IIO
sible the weight of the pliers. A smooth cylindrical sleeve D lits within the casing B and bears against the rear faces of the shoulders B2. The sleeve D has two oppositely arranged lugs D which projectrearwardly from the-casing B when the sleeve D is in position. It may also be noted that the sleeve D fits in the casing B between the casing and the disk C of the cam block and rotates upon said disk. Each handle lever E is provided at its inner end with a flat curved cam E, which cam carries a laterally extending pin E2 roj ecting upon both sides of the cam and w ich serves as a movable pivot upon which the levers work. The collar F is provided with a retaining flange F at its rear end and is l. threaded upon the rear end portion of the sleeve B. The cams E of the handle levers E rest loosely within the collar F and between the lugs D/ of the rotatable sleeve D and bear upon the rear face of the disk C. The pivot pins E2 bear upon the flange F of the collar F when the jaws are in a closed position. Suitable cutting blades K are carried by one side of the jaws A.
From the above description it is thought that the operation of the pliers will be obvious. The handles E rotate loosely in the sleeve F and are held in the proper position by means of the lugs D of the sleeve D and this sleeve rotates freely within the casing B. When the handles E are pressed together the cams E engage the smooth fiat rear face of the disk C', forcing the same forwardly, and the cam block C slides forwardly between the shoulders B2 and the cam faces C2 engage the cam faces A3 and force the rear ends of the jaws A apart, thus bringing the outer ends of the jaws together. It will be obvious as there is no positive connection between the cams E and the disk C the jaws will be operated no matter what position is assumed by the handle relative to the aws and the jaws may be operated during rotation of either the jaws or the handle as well as while the parts are stationary.
It will be obvious that while the main object of the invention is to make the jaws rotatable with respect to the handle, the handle can also be rotated without imparting rotation to the jaws in case it is desirable to shift the position of the handles in'order to get a better grip.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A device of the kind described comprising a pair of gripping jaws, and a pair of operating handles adapted to operate said jaws, and means for rotating the jaws independent of movement of the handles.
