NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.

Be it known that I, HARRY CeDnN Mc- CLURG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a speciiication.
It is the object of my invention to provide a bottle with a new form of valve closure or stopper which shall permit the outflow of the liquid contents but effectually prevent the inflow of liquids, and which is so constructed and secured in the bottle neck that it cannot be removed therefrom, while the valves are so protected that it is impossible to reach them with an inserted tool or instrument.
The details of construction, arrangement and operation of parts are as hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a longitudinal central section of a bottle neck and my improved stopper inserted therein. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the main portion or hollow body of the stopper. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of that portion of the stopper which is adapted to be inserted in the hollow body portion shown in Fig. 2 and provided with a valve controlling the liquiddischarge opening. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of another part of the stopper which includes a valve controlling the air vent and is adapted to be secured to the part shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal section of the stopper in a plane atright angles to the plane of section shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 6, 7, S and 9 are transverse or cross sections on the lines fri-6, 7-7, 8 8, and 9 9, respectively, olf Fig. l. Fig. 10 is a central vertical section of the bottle neck with my improved stopper inserted therein, a portion of the same being shown in side view and another portion broken away to show the interior construction. Fig. ll is a perspective sectional View of a bottle neck with my improved stopper therein, the parts being inverted as required ior the discharge of liquid.
In carrying out my inventionsee Figs. 1 and lO-I provide a bottle neck A interiorly with an annular groove l, and a shoulder 2, the same being duly spaced apart. My improved closure or stopper comprises see Figs. 2 and 5-the following parts, towit, a tubular body B, which is open at the bottom and provided at the top With an air vent 3 and lateral openings 4 for discharge of liquid, a part C adapted to be inserted in the body B and cemented thereto and having a cylindrical base 5 and an elongated portion provided with a liquid-discharge valve 6; a smaller part D having an airvent 7, and provided with a tenen 8 adapted to be inserted and secured in a socket 9 formed in the top of base 5 ol" part C 5 small tubes E and F, attached, respectively, to the head and base olI the parts B, C, and serving as air vents or conductors; one or more halls G, which serve to open the air valve 7 ol" part D, when the bottle is inverted as required to discharge liquid; and annular, elastic, preferably cork, washers H, H, which are applied to the parts B, C, respectively. 'lhe washer H is held in the circumferential groove l formed in bottle neck A just below the liquid-discharge openings 4, and the other, H', abuts the shoulder 2 ol the bottle neck. This shoulder 2, corresponds in function to the lower shoulder of groove l, furnishing a stop for a washer. The washers are necessarily compressed when the stopper' is inserted in the bottle neck A, and the upper one H expands into the groove l while ,the lower washer H remains more compressed and assists in forming a liquid-tight closure.
The head of the tubular body B is constructed with a lateral llange S which prevents access oi a tool to the upper washer H, while permitting escape of liquid as required.
The head of part B is provided below the lateral opening 4 with a vertical passage 9- see F ig. l-which receives the tapered and 'flattened upper end 1() oil part C, the I'lat side of the same being in contact with the `flat side of said passage. The elongated vertical portion oi" part C is hollow and provided with an opening on the [lat inner side, which opening is covered and normally closed by the thin, elastic, flat valve 6. This is secured at the lower end, the upper end being free to open to pressure of liquid. It may be cemented in place, and, for additional security, a thin, elastic washer 7, of cork or other material, may be inserted between the parts C and D, as shown in Fig. l.
The flat top of part D is inclined and provided with an opening normally closed by the thin, elastic, lI'lap valve 7, which is secured at the top by any suitable means, preierably by a Ushaped spring clamp.

extends down to the part C, and the latter and the lower tube F constitute practically a continuation of the vent passage, through which air finds admission when Jthe bottle is inverted and the liquid contents of the bottle are being discharged. In such case, the balls G roll against the valve 7, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. l1, thus opening it by pressure due to gravity, so that air' has free admission.
When the bottle is held vertical or otherwise, so that the balls G are out of contact with the valve 7, as shown in Figs. l and 5, the valve remains closed.
The liquid passes out through the passage l0-see Figi-provided in the base 5 of part C, thence into the chamber behind the valve 6, which opens by reason of the pressure of the liquid, thus into the chamber of body B, and lastly through the passage 9 and opening 4 in the head of art B.
All the parts B, C, D, F, of the stopper, are constructed of glass, the tubes E, F, being cemented in place, and then the part C inserted in and cemented to the inclosing part B, whereupon the stopper is ready for introduction in the bottle neck. @i i1 {The flap or plate valves 6 and Tzare preferably formed of mica, but other materials may be used.
It is apparent that the lower shoulder of groove l in the bottle neck, may be dispensed with if the lower shoulder 2 be employed, since the stopper will be held in place as well as if the groove l be retained and, again, if the groove be employed, the lower shoulder 2 may be dispensed with, since it is only nec.
essary to have two shoulders to revent end- Wise movement of the stopper w en duly inserted.
What I claim is- 1. The combination, with a bottle-neck having interior shoulders s aced apart, of a stopper provided with waslliers spaced a art corres ending to said shoulders, which t ey are a apted to engage, the stopper having also a discharge opening above the upper washer, and in its lower portion a passage that opens above the lower washer, and a spring valve adapted to normally close such lower opening or inlet, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a bottle neck provided interiorly with means for holding a stopper in place, of a stopper comprising a tubular body having a washer and provided with a liquid passage eXtendin and opening above and below the said was er, a hollow part arranged in said body and having a side discharge passage and a spring-pressed valve applied to and adapted to normally close the said passage, substantially as shown and described.

The improved tubular stopper for nonrellable bottles, comprising an upper portion'nhavinga lateraliopeningland a lower portion having a lateral opening for discharge of liquid, a spring flap valve for normally closing the said lower opening, the said stopper being also further provided with an air vent in the lower portion, substantially as described.
4. The improved stopper for non-reillable bottles, comprising a tubular body having an annular washer which is elastic and adapted to spring outward for engaging the bottle neck, and also having a liquid discharge passage extending above and below the washer, said body being provided with a part having a side passage and a selfclosing spring valve, and a part having an air assage and a selfclosing valve therefor, as escribed.
5. The combination, with a bottle neck, of a stopper adapted for insertion therein, and provided with means for forming a liquidtight joint, the said stopper comprising a tubular body having a lateral discharge opening at the top and an attached part inserted in its chamber and comprising a lower portion having a passage for liquid and also having a lateral opening, a self-closing valve arranged to normally close such liquid passage, the said lower portion of the stopper having also an air-vent arranged substantially as described.
6. A stopper for non-refillablebottles, comprising a tu ular body having a lateral opening at the top, a lower part provided with a passage for liquid, which passage has a lateral opening, a iiap valve for normally closing such opening, and the said lower part having also an air-vent comprising a passage in the upper portion ofthe tubular body and a communicating passage in the lower portion of the stopper and a self-closing valve applied for regulating admission of air to the lower passage, a movable weight arranged below said valve for applying pressure thereto, by gravity, when the bottle is inverted as described.
7. The improved stopper'for non-rellable bottles, comprising a body portion having an opening at the top for discharge of liquid, and another opening for admission of air, a lower part having a lateral discharge opening, and a valve normally closing the same, but adapted to open to pressure of liquid, said lower port being also provided with an air passage opening upward and having a spring valve for normally closing it, and a movable weight which applies pressure to such valve Jfor opening it, when the bottle is inverted, substantially as described.
8. The improved bottle stopper for nonrefllable bottles, comprising the tubular body, having openings at the top for passage of liquid and air, and a part inserted in the lower portion of the body and comprising a basevwhich is secured to said body and provided With an elongated portion having a IOO IIO
passage and chamber opening laterally, a spring valve adapted to normally close the opening but yielding outwardly to pressure of liquid, and means for controlling the admission of air thus forming an air vent, substantially as described.
9. The improved stopper for non-refillable bottles, comprising a tubular body which is open at the bottom and provided at the top With air and liquid passages, a base portion provided with a liquid passage opening laterally and a spring valve for normally closing the same, also with an air passage and a valve for normally closing it, substantially as described.

The improved stopper for non-refillable bottles, comprising a tubularbody portion having air and liquid passages ,in the top portion, a part, provided With air and liquid passages and elastic valves for closing them, which is adapted to be inserted and secured in the body portion, and tubes attached respectively to the body portion and the inserted portion and serving for conduction or' air, substantially as described.
