NON-RE-FILLABLE BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.761,298, dated May 31, 1904.
Application filed March 22, 1904.
To all whomit may/concernw Be it known that I, THOMAS J. IRWIN, a-citi zen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn,
in the countyof Kings and State of New York,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in NonsRefillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
This invention relates to bottles, jugs, jars, and similar vessels; and the object thereof is to provide a vessel of this class with an inte rior neck attachment whereby the vessel when once filled and the neck attachment applied may be emptied of its contents, but cannot be i refilled or reused.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown my improvement applied to an ordinary bottle, and the invention is fully disclosed in'the following specification, of which said drawings form a part in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated bysuitable' line 5 5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6, a section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 7 a view similar to Figs. 1 and 2, but'showing the neck of the bottle invertedand in an upright position and showing the position of the parts of my improvement when an attempt is made to refill the bottle by forcing liquids thereinto.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at a an ordinary bottle having a neck a and in the practice of my invention I secure in the neck a a tube or tubular member 6 and in the bottomportion of which is secured an open conical support 0, around which are ports or passages 0 and which is adapted to receive a spherical body or ball 0 w At apredetermined distance above thesupport 0 a transverse partition-plate d is secured Serial No. 199,328. and I also preferably place on said wire or rod 0 a movable washer f, composed of some light material, and the end of the wire or rod 0 is provided with a knob 6 which holds said washer thereon.
Above the plate d and. at a predetermined distance therefrom and also separated a predetermineddistance'are two transverse baffrom the foregoing description when taken I in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof; After the bottle has been filled with the desired contents the attachment-tube Z) is secured therein in'any desired manner or by any preferred means and the end of the neck is closed by "a cork or stopper in the usual manner. IVhen it is desired to empty the bottle or discharge a portion of its contents, the bottle is inverted or tilted, as shown in Fig. 1. In this operation the ball or body 0 drops into the support 0, as shown in said figure, and the valve 03 drops downwardly on the wire or rod 6, as is also shown in said figure, and the conents of the bottle will flow out through the ports or passages 0 around the support 0, through the port or passage (Z in the plate d, and through the ports or passages g in the plate 9 and through the port or passage 72 in the plate it, and this operation may be continued or repeated until the bottle is entirely emptied.
If an attempt be made to refill the bottle by pouring liquids thereinto, the ball or body 0 will drop into the position shown in Fig. 2, and the valve d will be closed, as is also shown in said figure, and no liquids can enter the,
bottle.
If an attempt be made to force liquids into the bottle by holding the bottle in an inverted or tilted position, the ball or body 0 will drop into its support or seat 0 and the liquids which are forced into the neck of the bottle will raise the valve (2* and force it to its seat, as shown in Fig. 7, and in this operation the washer f will also rise on the wire or rod 0 and will aid in closing the hole (Z in the valve. The hole (Z may be made so small that the valve d will close the neekof the bottle without the use of the washer f, as it will be understood that the wire or rod 0 is very small, and the hole (i may also. be made very small, and noliquids could enter the bottle against the pressure of the air therein, and there would be no way for said air to escape.
My improvement is simple in construction and operation and is also comparatively inexpensive and may be applied to any kind or class of vessels herein specified or other vessels similar thereto.
Having fully described my invention, what Iclaimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A bottle or similar vessel provided with a neck attachment-which is secured therein, said attachment comprising a tube, a transverse support secured in the bottom portion of the tube and having a central opening around which are ports or passages, a body placed in said tube and adapted when thobottle isinverted to rest in said support in said opening, a transverse valve-plate secured in said tube above said support and provided with a port or passage, a valve hinged to the top of said plate and adapted to close said port or passage, a rod or wire connected with said body and passed loosely through said valve and of a length greater than the distance between said support and the valve-plate, and baffles secured in said tube above said valveplate, substantially as shown and described.
2. A bottle or similar vessel provided with a neck attachment which is secured therein, said attachment comprising a tube, a transverse support secured in the bottom portion of the tube and having a central opening around which are ports or passages, a body placed in saidtube and adapted when thcbottle is inverted to rest in said support in said opening, a transverse valve-plate secured in said tube abovesaid support and provided with a port or passage, a valve hinged to the top of said plate andadapted to close said port or passage, a rod or wire connected with said body and passed loosely through said valve and of a length greater than the distance between said support and the valve-plate, and baffle-plates secured in said tube above said valve-plate, said wire or rod being also provided at the end thereof with a knob and with a washer which is movable thereon, substantially as shown and described.
