RAYMOND K. STEVENS, OF SIDNEY, IOWA.
AUTOMATIC GAS CUT-OFF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
katented April 30, 1907'.
Application filed December 4,1905- Serial No. 290.209.
Be it known that I, RAYMOND Ii. STEVENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sidney, in the county of Fremont, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Gas Cut-Oil's,- and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to automatic gas cut-oil's and more particularly to that class in which the result is accomplished by means of the contraction of a rod, against which the flame is adapted to impinge, the said contraction taking place after the gas has been blown out or turned oil.
The primary object of the invention is to avoid accidents resulting from accidental or unintentional blowing out of the gas.
W ith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gas-jet showing my invention in use thereon. Fig. 2 is a detail top plan view oil the same re moved from the jet. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of the same removed. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical longitudinal sectional view Fig. 5 is a detail vertical sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a similar view on the line 66 of Fig. 3, and, Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the spring operated disk.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 denotes a gas-jet and 11 an automatic cutofl'. The cut-ell" 11 comprises a base 12 which is secured to the bracket of the gas-jet in any suitable manner and which is provided on one of .its edges adjacent one of its ends with a recess 13 in which is engaged the jet 10. Secured upon the extreme opposite end of the base 12 is a bracket 14 wl ich includes an arm 15 which latter ext ends forwardly of the base and in spaced relation thereto. Rotatably mounted in the arm 15 and the base 12 is a stem 16 which connects directly to the valve of the gas-jet. Secured upon the upper end of the stem 16 above the arm 15 is a knob 17 by means of which the said stem may be rotated, and upon the stem 16 below the said arm is a disk 18. The said disk 18 is provided in its periphery with a lug 19 and a notch 20 and on its under side with a j cam lug 21. Secured .at one of its ends beneath the disk 18 is a coil spring 22 which i has its other end secured to pin on the j base 12, the said spring serving to rotate the I said stem under certain conditions to be hereinafter noted.
Mounted upon the base 12 in advance of the stem 16 is a second base 24 provided at its ends with cars 25 and 26. A rod 26 has one of its ends seated in a recess in the car 25 and a second rod 27 is engaged. through an opening 28 in the car 26, the said rod 27 being provided with a pointed end for engagement with the notch 20 in the disk 18. Mounted fixedly upon the rod 27 is a blade 29 having a laterally projecting linger piece 30 and an upwardly tapered toothed member 31 which is provided 011 its edge with teeth 32. Engaged over the rods 26 and 27 is a helical spring 33 which has one of its ends abutting the block 29 and the other of its ends abutting the car 25 to normally force or hold the block 29 against the car 26. Extending upwardly from the car 25 is a guide 34 which is provided with a vertical slot 35 and mounted upon the base 12 at its forward end is a standard 36 which is bifurcated at its upper end to form spaced. apertured cars 37 between which is pivoted a rod 38 which extends through the slot in the guide 34 and is provided at its rear end with a yoke or loop 39 which is interchangeably engaged with the teeth 32. i
The lug 19 is arranged to abut a pin 10 provided upon the base 12 to limit the movement of the disk 18 in one direction.
Pivoted to one side of the'car 26 is a lever 41 which is provided at its forward end with a laterally extending lug 42 and at its rear end with a foot 43 arranged to engage the cam lug 21.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the knob being turned to open tllegas valve, the rod 27 will engage the notch 20 on the disk 18 to hold the valve in an open position and that the heat from the llame will be directed upon the rod 38. The rod 33 will expand as it becomes heated, allowing its yoke end to successively engage the teeth of the toothed member.
Should the gas be blown out by accident, the rod upon cooling, will contract, drawing back the block 29 and releasing the end of the rod 27 from the notch 20 in the disk 18, allowing the same to rotate to cut oil' the gas supply. It will be noted that the cam lug close the valve, expansible means engaged and an eXpansible rod engaged With the toothed member and arranged to successively engage the teeth thereon when eX- panlded and to retract the member When coo 3. In an automatic cut-off, the combination with a valve stem, of means connected 1. In an automatic gas cutofl', the combi with the valve stem for automatically closing causes the lever to rock when the knob is l l l l l nation with a valve stem, of meansfor holdl the same, a notched disk carried by the valve turned to turn oil the gas supply and that when so rocked the lug 42 will engage the rod 38 to lift the same from the rack teeth. By pressing the finger piece 80 rearwardly the gas may be automatically cut off.
What is claimed is 1-- ing the stem in position to open the valve, stem, a rod arranged for engagement northe stem to mally with the notch in the disk, a block carried by the rod, a tapered toothed member carried by the block, and an expansible rod having a looped end engaged with the toothed member and arranged to ride down wardly over the teeth of the same when expanded and to retract the same when cool.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.

automatic means for turning With the valve-releasing means and arranged to automatically adjust its engagement l therewith when expanded, and means for manually actuating the releasing means.
2. In an automatic gas cut-oil", the combination with a valve stem, of me ans for turning the stem to close the valve, a notched disk carried by the stem, a rod arranged for engagement with the notch in the disk, means for holding the rod in such engagement, a toothed member carried by the rod,
