Description

PATENTED APR. so, 1907. A. w. ROBINSON. GRAB HOOK.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 3. 1906.
ALBERT W. ROBINSON, OF OOHILTREE, TEXAS.
GRABHOOK- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed May 3,1906. Serial No. 315,094.
To [LZZ whom, it 71mg concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT W. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ochiltrce, in the county of Ochiltree and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grab-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a novel form of grab hook which is particularly designed for use in hoisting well casings, drill rods, pump rods, or the like, being susceptible of use in various ways for engaging parts and actuating the same in a desired way. The hook is so constructed as to obviate all likelihood of accidental disengagement thereof from the hook and at the same time admits of a direct or straight draft on the work, obviating likelihood of bending a pipe, wire, or similar element, which is engaged by the device.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hook embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a view of a modification of the invention.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the invention, the numeral 1 designates the shank of the hook and the numeral 2 a lateral extension or foot projecting from the lower end portion of said shank 1. The upper end of the shank 1 is preferably formed in an integral eye 3, or a similar part, adapted to be engaged by a hook or connected with hoisting means of any type in order that the invention may be readily operated as may be necessary in the particular application thereof to the work. The extension or foot 2 is provided with a longitudinal or vertical work receiving opening 4 and the construction of the hook is such as to provide peculiar entrance means to the opening 4, thereby obviating likelihood of accidental displacement of the work therefrom in the use of the device. The mouth or entrance to the opening 4 is of tortuous form and comprises a slot 5 formed longitudinally in the shank 1 and leading at its lower end, into the opening 4. The slot 5 constitutes a pasleads from a side of the shank 1 and commu nicates with the slot 5, the passages 5 and 6 comprising a mouth of angular formation in communication with the opening 4.
It is designed that the hook shall be constructed of any suitable material, and is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the foot 01' extension 2 is reinforced by a web 7 connecting a side thereof with the shank 1. The opening 4 is adapted to receive the work and such work will of course be provided with a shoulder, collar, or similar projecting portion to rest upon the upper side of the extension or foot 2 and secure the necessary engaging cooperation of the device with such work. It will be observed that three different movements of the hook or device are necessary in order to engage the same properly or disengage the same, with reference to the work. in engaging the hook, the shank 1 is disposed in a horizontal position and by lateral movement, the work is forced through the inlet 6 into the slot 5. The shank 1 is then moved longitudinally to cause the work to approach the opening 4, after which the shank is turned up into an upright 01' vertical position, which carries the work into a position longitudinal with said shank and arranged in the opening 4. The operation. is just the reverse in disengaging the work. It will be apparent that there is absolutely no likelihood of the work being accidentally displaced from the opening 4, by reason of the peculiar formation of the entrance or mouth of said opening, which is comprised in the angularly arranged passages or openings 5 and 6, above described.
Fig. 4 illustrates a slight modification of the invention wherein the device is made from a piece of metal having the lower portion thereof bent laterally to form the extension or foot 2 provided with the opening 4. In Fig. 3 the web 7 is omitted.
The various adaptations or uses to which the hook may be put are not described as the breadth aifd scope of the application of the device will be obvious from the foregoing.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A grab hook, comprising a shank a longitudinal slot in one end and having ahorizontal extension projected from the extremity of said slotted end and provided with a longitudinal slot, the longitudinal slots of the shank and horizontal extension registering and in communication, one of the members bordering upon the longitudinal slot of the shank having an opening extending therethrough to afford ready ingress and egress from the longitudinal slots of said shank and the horizontal terminal extension thereof.
2. A new article of manufacture, a grab hook comprising a shank, an eye at one end and a longitudinal slot at the opposite end, and having a horizontal extension projected from the slotted end and formed With a longitudinal slot in register With the longitudinal slot of the shank, and in communication therewith, a Web connecting the shank and its horizontal extension and arranged at one side of the longitudinal openings thereof, said shank having a lateral opening in the member bordering upon the longitudinal slot thereof remote from the member connected to the horizontal extension by the aforesaid. Web.
Intestimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ALBERT XV. ROBINSON. [L. s.]
Vitnesses:
A. L. ROBINSON, S. B. GREGORY.
