Description

April 20, I954 'r. N. BROWN SUCKE'R ROD ELEVATOR Filed 'Sept. 15, 1949 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
Patented Apr. 20, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SUCKER ROD ELEVATOR Tom Norman Brown, Amarillo, Tex.
Application September 13, 1949, Serial No. 115,486
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a sucker rod elevator designed for elevating a sucker rod and holding the sucker rod elevated while undergoing rep-air or while the sucker rod sections are being removed or connected.
An important object of the invention is to provide an elevator of this character which comprises a member having a slot which is so positioned over a sucker rod adjacent to a sucker rod section coupling, that it may be readily forced under the sucker rod coupling and when swung upwardly, will move to a vertical or elevating position wherein the elevator is securely held on the sucker rod with which it is used.
With the foregoing and. other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a sucker rod elevator constructed in accordance with the invention, as positioned under the coupling between sucker rod sections, prior to moving the elevator to its operative position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the elevator as swung upwardly to its operative position and in clamped relation with respect to the sucker rod being elevated.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view illustrating the position of the elevating tool with respect to the sucker rod.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 indicates well tubing in which the sectional sucker rod 6 operates, the sections of the sucker rod being connected by means of the coupling 7.
The elevator comprises a heavy bar 8 of circular cross-section, one end of the bar being substantially square in cross-section, and extended laterally as at 9, providing a lift, the outer surface of the bar where the laterally extended end merges into the bar, being rounded as at l6 providing a cam surface for contact with the upper end of the well tubing when the bar 8 is being moved to its vertical or lifting position.
The laterally extended lift portion 9 is extended at right angles, to provide a horizontal supporting surface, as shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing, when the elevator is positioned on the sucker rod for lifting the sucker rod.
A slot I0 extends from a point along the bar 8, into the laterally extended portion 9, as clearly shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing, so that the device may be positioned over the sucker rod to be lifted, the elevator being positioned with the open end of the slot indicated at l I placed next to the sucker rod under the coupling 1, as shown by Fig. 1. With the elevator in this position, the outer end of the elevator is swung upwardly to a vertical position, the right angled or laterally extended portion 9 moving to a horizontal position directly under the coupling 7, where the weight of the sucker rod being elevated, is directed to the laterally extended portion 9, the operative or elevating position of the elevator being shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing.
A yoke 53 is swiveled on one end of the bar 8 and affords means whereby a hook such as indicated at It and carried at one end or" a cable, may be connected with the elevator, the cable forming a part of hoisting machinery not shown, for elevating or hoisting the sucker rod under treatment.
A right angled lug I5 is formed at one side of the slot it, the lug providing a stop which may be positioned against the well tubing to hold the device against slipping, as it is being worked under the coupling of the sucker rod to be lifted.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a sucker rod elevating device which may be readily and easiiy positioned under a coupling used in coupling sections of a sucker rod together, the elevator being moved to a vertical position moving the laterally extended member 9 formed in one end of the main bar of the lifter, directly under the coupling, for lifting the sucker rod when the hook of the hoisting machinery not shown, is hooked into the yoke 13 at one end of the main bar of the elevator.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A lifting device of the class described, comprising a bar, a portion of one end of the bar being extended rearwardly in parallel spaced relation to the main portion of the bar, providing an open-ended slot, the entry into the open-ended slot being along a line parallel to the axis of the main portion of the bar, a portion of the end of the bar having the open-ended slot, extending at right angles to the main portion of the bar providing a lift portion, and the extremity of the rearwardly extended end of the bar being disposed at right angles to the main bar in a direction opposite to the lift portion, providing a stop.
