This invention relates to improvements in brooms.
The object of the invention is to provide a broom having arranged on the upper, end of its head a shield or cap and on its side edges guard plates bg. means of which the u per edge's of the broom head are protected rom abrasion or wearing by coming into contact "with obstructions having rough surfaces.
A further object is to provide an improved means for securing the edge protecting plates on the broom head.
With the above and other'objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features -of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter de'- scribedandclaimed.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure 1 is a broken perspective view of a broom constructed in accordance with the invention Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on a line with one of the shield and handle fastening devices; and Fig. 3 is a similar view taken throughl the side protecting or'guard plates on a line with one of the rows of stitching for'securing said plates to the broom head.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 denotes the broom head, to which is secured the handle 2. On the upper end of the broom head 1 is arranged a ca or shield 3, which is preferably formed f a 's eet metal strip or band bent around the up er end ofl the broom head, the ends of said s 'eld plate being slipped over each other to a suitable distance, as shown. l
Through the shield and the upper end of the broom head is inserted two or more fastening devices 4, said devices being here shown and are preferably in the form of staples, theends of which, after being passed through one side of the shield and the broom head are passed through the lapped ends of the opposite side of the shield, after which said ends are bent at right angles and again forced through the lapped ends of the shield Specification of Letters Patent. vApplication led August 16, 19D8. and into the lower end of the broom handle, thereby serving the double function of, fastening the shield onto the head of the broom and also securing the handle in said head.
On the sides of .the upper portion of the broom headare arranged curved guard plates 5, the upper ends of which are inserted beneath the lower edge of the shield 3 and held in placethereby. Thel guards are loosely secured at their upper ends under the cap 3 and are therefore preferably made of a substantially uniform width throughout their len ths for the purpose of securing a snflicient y rigid fastening without the necessity of rigidly connecting the upper ends with the cap. In the lower end of the guard plates 5 adjacent to each edge are formed a series of. perforations 6, through which and the head of the broom is adapted to be assed the end cross threads 7, with which the room is stitched. The cross threads 7 are Ilooped laround the binding or.horizontal threads 8 of the broom in the usual manner, said binding threads being passed around the outer side orf the guard plates, thereby securely fastening the same to the edges of the broom head. By thus fastening the guard plates, the same are secured simultaneously with the stitching of the broom head, said threads serving the two-fold purpose of holding the broom head together and the guard plates in place. It
also avoids the placing of any of the threadsl in straining or drawing contact with the sharp edges of the perforations 6, as the threads 8 pass over said holes and the threads 7 through them, whereby the strain or contact 'of the threads 8 is upon .the smooth outer faces of the plates 5, and the strain or contact of the threads 7 is upon the threads 8.
By providing a shield or cap on the upper end of the broom head and guard plates on the edges thereof to extend below the lower end of said shield, the broom straws will be ICO oiple or sacrificing any-of the advantages o'r this invention, as dened by the appended claim. Y
Having thus deseribed'rny invention, what I olairn as new and desire to secure b v Letters-Patent, is :f-
In a broom7 a cap on the head thereof, a curved guard plate on each side of the broom, the upper end of Whioh'is removably seated under said cap and the lower end is perforated upon each edge, binding threads around the head and around the lower ends of said plates, said threads passing over said Dertorations, and cross threads through thehead and through said 4perforations and around 15 the binding threads, whereby the straining ,Contact of the threads with sharp edges is avoided. y
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witzo GEO. S. RUssEY, A. G. STEINHEIMER.
