PUNCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed October 3,1906- Serial No. 337,225.
To a/Z whom, t nui/y concern.-
Beit known that I, STERLING BorssnAU, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented an Improved Punch, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in punches, and especially in those punches designed for use by railway ticket agents, and the invention has for an object to provide a novel construction whereby to simplify the work of those using punches, by combining` in one instrument a series of punches so that the ticket agent may make the several punches in a ticket without putting one punch down and taking up another, and also provide guides to aid in lining up the tickets so they may be punched severally at the correct points, and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view,
embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the pivotal connection between one of the punches proper and its supporting part or jaw. Fig. 4 is an inverted perspective view of the upper jaw. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the lower jaw. Fig. 6 is a cross section on about line 7-7 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 7 is a similar cross section illustrating a somewhat different construction of punch from that shown in the other figures.
Heretofore it has been necessary for agents to use separate punches, each one containing one character, and this has led not only to unnecessary expense for the multiplicity of punches,.but also leads to errors due to the haste, and loss of time, consumed in taking up and laying down a number of instruments. These objections I seek to overcome by combining the several punching devices in connection with a single pair of jaws.
In the construction shown, I employ what for convenience of reference I term the upper jaw A and the lower aw A2, having the handie portions c and a2, and being pivoted together at their forward ends at A3, a spring D being connected at one end d2 with the l jaw A, and bearing at its other end against the jaw A2 to force the handle ends of the jaws apart, and thus open the punch, as will be understood from Fig. l, in which the several punching devices are shown retracted by the operation of the spring as before described.
The jaw A is shown in detail in Fig. 4, and is made cruciform in shape with the arms E extending laterally from the body portion E, and with the forwardly projecting arm c, the .lateral arms E and the for\\ardly projecting arm c being provided with punching devices B and B3, the punching devices B being at the opposite sides of the punch forming the opposite or side punch devices and the forward punch B3 being in advance of such side devices B as shown in Fig. 2. The body E is slotted in its under side to permit the operation of the lower jaw a2, and such jaw has pivoted to it at I)2 and D, the punch menibers d2 and d3 which cooperate with corresponding dies in the upper jaw as is common in punches. The punch members d are pivoted to the outer ends of arms d which extend laterally from the lower jaw a? and preferably are upturned at their outer ends to facilitate the pivoting of the members (Z3 thereto at D, as will be understood from the drawings.
In operating the punch, I find it desirable to apply the tickets thereto in the dotted line positions l, 2 and 3, or in the order 3, 2 and l, and it will be noticed that in the positions l and 3, the tickets, which ordinarily are of considerable length, and must be punched at dill'erent points along said length, are placed parallel to the direction of length of the punch fitting in the slots formed in the arms E and e, and to avoid any difllculty in so inserting the tickets as to punch them at the proper points, I avoid any obstructions to the space between the punching lines of the punch so that by avoiding such obstruction the ticket may be arranged in the slots #l of the side punching devices, and extend. indefinitely to the front and rear in order to permit the punching of the ticket at any point. I also construct the punch without any obstructions laterally to the front punching device at B3, so the ticket when arranged as shown by dotted lines 2 in TOO Fig. 2, may extend indefinitely to both sides, the slots 4 and A5 being provided to receive the tickets when arranged to be punched, and in order to guide the ticket between the side punching devices and the intermediate punching device, I provide the diagonally disposed plates C and C spaced apart to permit the passage of a ticket between them and extending between the side slots I and the front slots A5, so that a ticket may be shifted from position 3 to 2 and then to position l, or in the reverse order, from position l to 2 and then to 3, without removing the ticket from the punch. I/Vhen the tickets are arranged in either of the positions 1 and 3, indicated in Fig. 2, it is desirable torv provide for guiding the same, and also for preventing any interference with the tickets by the hand grasping the handles a and a2 for operating the punch, and to this end I provide the rearwardly projecting lugs A4 extending back from the cross bar E on opposite sides of the handles a and 0.2, and operating as guides and guards in the manner which will be understood from Fig. 2.
In Fig. 7 I show a somewhat different construction in which the members of the side punches are carried by levers pivoted between their ends and supporting the punching members at their outer ends and projecting at their inner ends into a slot in the handle 0,2 for operation thereby. In connection with the side punches B and the front punching device B3, I prefer to slot the upper jaw A at A above the cross bar E', and to provide a punch member b2 cooperating with a die B2 whereby to provide a fourth punching device, as ticket agents are ordinarily required to punch a ticket with the time limit, the destination, the baggage check, and half rate, and I am able to provide for all these operations in a single punch, as will be understood from the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings.
What I claim isl. A punch consisting of the opposing aws pivoted together at their front ends and provided in rear of said pivot with the central punch proper and in rear thereof and at its opposite sides with the lateral punches proper one of said jaws having a passageway extending between the lateral punches and the intermediate forward punch and forming a guide in which a ticket may be passed from punch to punch, the jaw having said guides being provided on opposite sides of a central line with the rearwardly projecting guide and guard lugs between which the hand may be passed to operate the device, substantially as set forth.
2. A punch comprising the pivoted jaws, one of which is provided with the punching devices and the other being provided with the "dies arranged in triangular form with the intermediate die projecting in advance of the side dies and having upper and lower plates extending between the side and intermediate dies and spaced apart forming a passageway in which a ticket may be guided between the dies, substantially as set forth.
3. A punch comprising the jaws pivoted together and having the rearwardly proj ecting handles and the punching devices in advance of the said handles, one of said jaws being provided on opposite sides of the handles with rearwardly extending guide and guard projections spaced apart from the opposite sides of the handles and adapted to permit the insertion between them and the handles of the hand inoperating the punch, substantially as set forth.
