To (ZZZ- whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FRANK H. BROWN and JOHN E. HANRAHAN, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, and GEORGE A. BOYDEN, of Mount \Nashington, in the county of Baltimore, State of Maryland, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds for Gas ting Type, Spaces, and Quads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a mold mechanism for casting type bodies, spaces and quads.
It is a well known fact to those skilled in the art of making type that those type-bodies which are provided with a character should be longer than the space or quads which are not provided with characters and which are employed in separating words of a sentence, or one sentence from another.
The present invention has among its objects to provide an improved mold in which the types of different lengthsthose with characters, as well as the shorter spaces or quads, may both be cast.
The broad idea therefore of the present invention is to combine with a type mold, devices or instrumentalities which by entering the mold cavity in a lengthwise or heightwise direction will shorten the cavity so that bodies of different lengths may be cast in the same mold.
lVith these objects therefore in view the accompanying drawing illustrates one form of device for carrying the invention into practical effect without however in any way limiting the invention to the particular devices shown.
Figure 1 illustrates a sectional plan view of the mold parts and ejectors in the operative position. Fig. 2 illustrates a vertical section through the mold parts and matrix and shows the lengthwise reduction in the mold cavity forthe purpose of casting spaces or quads. Fig. 3 illustrates a side elevation of a matrix employed in casting the shorter spaces or quads, and Fig. 4 illustrates an edge view of same.
In the drawing, 1 designates the base block of the mold, the top surface of which in present instance is provided with a longitudinally-extending head, 2. A plate, 8, has position at one side of the base block and serves of the guide-plates 3 and 5 and said nippleplate is provided with a port, 7. It is also to be understood that any preferred form of metal supply device may be employed in connection with the invention and that the molten metal will be supplied through the port, 7.
An ejector, 8, has position on the top surface of the base-block 1 and the ends of said ejector, in the present instance, are designed to form one side Wall of the mold cavity as will hereinafter be more fully described. The ejector 8 is provided at each end with a perforation 9, and the opposite flat longitudinal sides or surfaces of the ejectors are each provided with a groove, 10, which extend from the ends toward the center. The groove at one end of the ejector being on the opposite side from the groove at the other end. These grooves fit, one at a time, over the bead 2 on the base block 1. At end of the ejector 8 the side is provided with a notch, 11,- which reduces the width so that the ejector is narrower at one end than at the opposite end. By this construction and arrangement of ejector thelatter may be reversed so that when it is desired to cast bodies of the standard type-high size the Wider end of the ejector may be employed to serve as one of the walls of the mold cavity and when it is desired to cast bodies either with or without characters, such for example as quads and spaces or short type with characters, the ejector may be reversed so that the narrower end may serve as one of the walls of the mold cavity.
The parts thus far described and in the present instance are arranged with respect to each other to form two right angles sides and one end of the mold cavity, the base block forming one side, the end of the ejector forming a side at right angles to the base block and the guide plates 3 and 5 serving to close the cavity at the end when the molten metal is injected.
