Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed June 16,1905. Serial No. 265,569.
To all 'wh/0m, it' 'Hetty concer/1,:
Be it known that I, ERNST. R. E. N rLssoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Astoria, in the county of Clatsop, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in T-Squares; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to T-squares and has for its object to provide a T-square having a movable blade and equipped with means for indicating the angle of both sides of the blade with respect to the head of the T-square.
Another object is to provide a square embodying this feature which will be extremely simple and which may be manufactured at a low figure.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the se vera] views, FiOure l is a plan view of the present square. Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of F ig. l. F ig. 3 is a view showing the square in folded position. Fig. et is an edge view.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a head 5 having an upwardly extending rib 6 at its outer edge in which `are mounted spirit levels 7 and S. Pivoted to the head centrally thereof there is a blade 9 which is movable to extend beyond the forward edge of the head at diilerent angles thereto or to lie upon the head and extending beyond one of the ends thereof as shown in Fig. 3.
At its pivoted end the blade is rounded as shown at 9 and carries a central indicator l0 which is movable to indicate different points upon a quadrant ll. This quadrant is divided into two scales l2 and 13 extending from its center to its ends and the quadrant is markedl at its outer edge with two series of figures A and B respectively, from 0 to 90, the series extending from the ends to the center of the quadranty the rib o being cut away at its inner portion to receive the convex edge of the quadrant, as shown.
I The inner edge of the quadrant is marked with two series of numbers `from 90 to 1S() each and. extending from the center to the ends of the quadrant and these series are indicated at C and l) respectively.
A wing 'nut 14; is provided and is arranged for operation to hold the blade against movement.
It will be apparent from the above that as the blade is moved upon its pivot the indicator will .nieve with respect to the scales and will indicate upon the scale A or il, the acute angle of the blade to the head and will indicate upon the scale C or l), the obtuse angle of the blade to the head. flt will be observed that when the blade is disposed in alinemont with the head as mentioned above, the edge of the blade will rest against the ribs (l which thus acts as a `guide to correctl)T position the blade upon the head.
ll'hat is claimed is:
ln a T-square, in combination., a blade having an upstanfling longitudinal rib on its outer edge, said rib having a coneaved seat formed in its forward edge and disposed centrally thereof; a quadrant secured tothe upper face of said blade and extending into the concave seat in said rib, said quadrant having a scale marked thereon; a blade having a rounded end pivoted to the head concentrioallyY with said end and with the quadrant, said blade being` movable into and out of position to lie with a longitudinal odge against said rib; an indicator carried by the rounded end of the blade and extending forwardly across the quadrant; and means for holding the blade at different points of its movemeint.
In testimony whereof, .l allix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ERNST. l. E. N ILSSON litnessesz p ,HENRY A. llEiNoNnN, RUDOLPH BASEL.
