Be it known that I, BENJAMIN K. ACKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in head rests for chairs and particularly contemplates a detachable head rest capable of service with chairs of any desirable type.

The invention resides primarily in the provision of a head rest embodying a novel clamping means capable of instantaneous attachment and detachment with relation to its support.

The invention further resides in the provision of a head rest having a clamping member capable of resiliently yielding under the pressure or the weight ol: a persons head, without permitting of the displacement of the head rest from its support.

The invention finally aims to provide a clamping means for head rests embodying as a component and coactive element thereof a suspension means, for the head rest in a different position so as to be invisible from the front of the chair when not in use.

The detailed construction will appear in the course of the following description in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming' a part of this specification, like numerals designating like parts throughout the several views, wherein,

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the application of a head rest constructed in accordance with my invention to a chair of conventional form. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof. In the practical embodiment of my invention the letter A designates a chair oi conventional form, to the rear lace of the back of which a member 1 is secured. 'lhe memloer 1 constitutes the stationary element o'l theelamping means for the head rest and is of substantial U shape, being provided with flanges 2 parallel to the body portion of said l l l l l member and severally formed with apertures 3 for the reception elt a securing means. In its disposition upon the chair A, a vertical open space 4 occurs between the member l and the back a oi said chair. The head rest proper, designated by the letter B is oi5 con- Ventional form and carries a clamping element 5 which co-acts with the element l. The element 5 comprises an elongated vertical shank 6 provided with apertures 7 through which pass fastening' screws S to secure said element to the head rest, and a tongue 9 bent upon the shank (j and extending at a very slight angle thereto. Owing to its proper tions the tongue 9 possesses a considerable degree ol resiliency. It will be readily understood that in the assemblage oll the structure the major portion of the shank 6 may be covered by upholstering so as to be invisible.

In practical use, the head rest B is applied to the chair A as shown in Fig. 2, the tongue 9 and the portion of the shank adjacent thereto forming a U shaped clamping element which is introduced into the recess 4. In this disposition of parts the tongue 9 bears against the element l and the shank 6 bears against the top bar a, and said tongue and shank serve to lirictionally support the head rest B in its raised or operative position. The head rest B is capable of resiliently yielding without displacement, as above intimated, owing to the resiliency of the element 5 as herein set forth. lVhen it is desired to invert the head-rest, the element 5 is disengaged from the element l and the tongue 9 employed as a suspension hook as is clearly shown in Fig. 5, in which position the head rest will be hidden from view by the back of the chair.

lVhile the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the proportions, shape and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
