Description
O. 8.13. 8n J G. SPOERL. Rocking-Chair.
No. 202,291. Patented April 9, 1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN S. E. SPOERL AND JOHN SPOERL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
- IMPROVEMENT IN ROCKING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 202,291, dated April 9, 1878; application filed February 20, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHRISTIAN S. E. SPoERL and JOHN GEURGE SPoERL, both of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rocking-Chairs, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of a chair embracing our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan ortop view thereof, partly in section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
Our invention relates to that class of chairs in which the rocking frame rests on a base or supporting-frame.
It consists in the combination, with the rocking frame and the base-frame, of one or more elliptical or C springs, which are fastened, at or near their middle portions, to the base-frame, and provided with outwardly-projecting arms, the outer ends of which are secured to the rocking frame, whereby an eX- tremely elastic connection of the rocking frame and base-frame is produced, and one which can be supplied at low cost.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the base-frame, B is the rocking frame, and O are the springs, of our chair.
Of the springs O we have in the example shown used two but, if desired, a greater or less number may be used.
The base-frame A is constructed of two side rails, a, and traverses b, while the rocking frame is composed of rockers c and traverses d, the rockers forming part of the seat-frame.
The springs G are composed of flat metallic strips, which are bent to the form of an ellipse, but are left divided, as at c, Fig. 1, thus giving them the general shape of the letter C. We fasten these springs G, at or near their middle portions, to the central traverse b of the base-frame, and at their ends to the traverses d of the rocking frame, rivets or other suitable devices being used for this purpose.
We provide the springs O with arms 0, which project therefrom in opposite directions, and which may be formed in one piece therewith, or formed separately and fastened thereto by rivets or other suitable means. These arms 0 are intended to increase the elasticity of the springs O, and constitute the end parts thereof, or the means for fastening the same to the rocking frame B.
hat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a rocking-chair, of a base-frame, a rocking frame resting on said base-frame, and one or more elliptical or C- shaped springs, O, secured at their middle portions to the base, and provided with outwardly-projecting arms 0 O, the outer ends of which are secured to the rocking frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands and seals this 19th day of February, 1878.
